why is so hard to make decent money as an owner operator in south fl?

    i moved to south fl last november,i used to live in nj,i leave my daycab working there and start searching for a job down here but looks like having someone working for me over there it is better than i driving locally here i can not find a company that i can make a decent owner operator check

    A big thing is there is very little industry in south Florida. It is a tourist state, with the only real industry is tourism and construction. if you are not associated with either, you will have a hard time. As stated above there are a lot of people hauling containers out of the ports, but there is very little money in in that because the people doing it are willing to work for almost nothing. There used to be a little money with a dump trailer down there hauling rock and sand, but since the economy in that part of the world is still not booming, the dump trailers are very slow. If you pull a refer, there is some produce and citrus money to be made. But you almost have to know someone to get in. There is a little flatbed money to be made hauling lumber and building materials. I know anytime I go south of I-10 in Florida it is hard to find anything to get back out of there. There are to many drivers that wind up in south Florida that can't find anything to get back out, and will take some ridiculous cheap freight just to head north. That part of the world has been tough for years.

    As a dispatcher, I get a lot of positive feedback from others about being able to to speak clearly on the phone. There seems to be a lot of concern about communication issues and drivers that are hard to understand. It's hard enough to manage all of the logistics involved without having to worry about simple language barriers, not to mention sub-standard equipment and insurance problems. Makes you wonder where this is all headed...(or maybe the answer is unavoidable)

    the speaking clear language thing is common throughout the country.

    in florida i guess you ned to speak jamaican or peurto rican.

    it's spanish pretty much everywhere else. minus a couple of cowboy states that are still around.

    I think its been tough all around the last year or so. The rates seem to keep going down.

    i am an immigrant came 7 years ago but i rather leave under the coconut tree than working here so hard for peanuts lol i dont move my truck if im not going to make money and everybody out there should do the same its better to work for a company at this rates its ridiculous 500 from miami to jacksonville power only they said a flat be with another one on top who has the face to offer that and who does that for that money if i found uuuuu

    Thanks for the reply. YES, I work very hard to raise the rates out there. I ALWAYS ask for more money and I give REASONS why a unit should pay more. Drivers work hard and, Yes, should only move cars when it makes sense. NOT for .19 cents per mile!

    Florida needs a lot but doesnt produce a lot. So, you have tons of trucks coming in with no loads out and thus the outgoing rates suck. Simple supply and demand. In most areas surrounding states may have loads, but in south florida, your kinda stuck in florida.
