In all the job postings I see in my area for LTL work, they require a tanker endorsement on top of hazmat. Just curious as to why

You may be required to haul unattached liquid holding totes.

You are right. I spaced those out.

Considering that you didn't post who you were talking about, I stand by my answer. There are some LTL companies that haul both freight and liquid.

The liquid totes that are sometimes hauled in vans often require the tanker endorsement (and Hazmat) because of the surge factor. If you had a whole van of drums of some sort of liquid, the reaction to the load surge is similar to (and as dangerous as,) hauling a tanker behind ya.

ExOTR, Short Fuse EOD and Ricco1689 Thank this.

Drums don't count, but totes do. I think the requirement for a tank endorsement kicks in when you have 4 or more totes. I'd have to look it up, but I think it's a certain number of gallons or a specific weight in those IBC totes.

I'm pretty sure even companies like Schneider want drivers to have tank endorsements now.

If the following conditions occur, you are responsible for obtaining a tanker endorsement on your CDL:
    • Your cargo includes liquid or gaseous individual containers larger than 119 gallon capacity.
    • The containers are loaded, and not empty.
    • The total combined volume in those containers exceeds 1,000 gallons.

KillingTime, ExOTR, MACK E-6 and 3 others Thank this.
