So I've got a squeaky clean mvr, no citations, accidents, DUI, or convictions. But...
I got pulled over last April, doing 65 in 60mph work zone in Grand Rapids Michigan. State trooper said "there was a worker present so the speed limit is 45". I argued that there wasn't anyone there when I drove through. He shrugged, said "I'll just give you a warning". Did an inspection, found no issues except for a missing ifta sticker. No citation received, but mentioned the ifta sticker and 20mph over limit on the inspection report.
I've been a company driver for going on 3 years now. I've got $70,000 cash saved up. Plan on buying a truck this year, and want to sign onto a carrier as owner operator. I called Schneider and asked if the bad PSP would be a deal breaker, he said he couldn't comment on it until I put in an application. Well, I don't want my current employer knowing that I'm thinking of leaving, so I can't do that.
Does anyone know if the 20mph over on PSP is a disqualifier for signing onto a carrier like Schneider, Prime, JB Hunt as owner op?

This is not in relation to your question. Ive not been in that situation there. I can say keep your 70k and wait for better times. Keep an eye on the truck market and buy as they are swinging up. Right now sucks just simply put. Sure you can buy a truck for pennies but then your gonna work it for pesos which doesn’t pencil out

Why do you call yourself niche transport and your plan is buy a truck and work for the biggest run of the mill trucking companies.Your goal is buy a truck and run it into the ground for sub par rates.Your problem isn’t your psp it’s your business plan

"Looking for a niche transport" was too long of name! I realize that owner ops running under their own authority with dedicated clients make more money, but I don't have clients, I'd have to rely on the load board. Besides, insurance for new operators is sky high. I'd rather get my feet wet running under someone else's authority for a bit.

Put that 70k into something other than a truck. Stock market or even bonds. Load boards right now are a mess. Trucking has been in recession for 2 years solid now.

I cleared 90k in 2023, 105k in 2024, 45k last year as a company man. Of course I spent 5 months looking for work last year. But still the point remains; O/O for some junk mega carrier is gonna burn you. Those starter owner op deals usually don't give you access to load boards anyways. The company dispatcher just sends you like 3 loads to choose from which they cut out of along with 2-3 brokers. At least that was what I've heard from the honest mega carrier O/O and even worse L/O.

Congrats on salting 70k away. Not an easy feat in a harsh operating environment.

    Of course it is.

    Did you check yours?

See if it there and dispute it.

If it isn't there, then don't sweat about it.

The MSP officer did not do you any favors; he actually screwed you by giving you a warning. He should have given you a ticket. I would have insisted on it because I could fight it to get it down or dismissed.

This 45, when workers are present, has no boundaries; it could be someone on the other side of the road at the porta-potty just taking a piss, and the cops see it, so it is 45.

Now we have something even more insane: they are putting in cameras to ticket vehicles that are speeding, but then the reason why we have cops is to determine who is actually driving to face their accuser, but more importantly, who is and isn't speeding. The cameras would be hard-pressed to make that determination when the vehicles are side by side, but one is passing the other.

I don't see why it wouldn't be on there. He gave me the report with it listed. From what I've gathered, disputing is a waste of time. The request just goes back to the issuing officer, who denies it of course. I scoured the Internet and couldn't find a single example of someone who got one successfully removed. So basically I can't sign onto any carrier as an owner operator until this falls off in a little over 2 years?

Exactly beating it in court and getting it successfully DATAQ’d have 0 to do with each other. Ticket or not.

I’m independent, I’ve DATAQ’d every single violation I’ve ever beaten or had Nolle Prosequl which simply means there wasn’t enough evidence to proceed at the time so the prosecution dropped it not the officer and guess what….every single violation stayed on my numbers as well as my PSP. Though insurance cannot see PSP. So that may help you find a carrier that is non mega

Maybe I had it backwards then, I presumed that the smaller carriers were a no-go, because PSP would affect insurance rates, but the larger carriers tend to be self insured, so a PSP violation wouldn't hold as much weight.
