We will all be dead before it happens, so why worry about it now?

I have posted about Self Driving Trucks before.

Self Driving Trucks ARE HERE... Licensed in Nevada.

One thing is certain and that is that progress will continue and it will do so at an exponential rate. Our technological ability is growing rapidly and this will give us the ability to do much more than have self-driving cars and trucks. They have already done this with Uber in cities so imagine what will happen in the next couple few years. Just watch this short video to get an idea of what is going to happen in the not too distant future.

Let's not go overboard with the rate at which technology has/will advance. Just because there are a few anecdotal stories of "self-driving" cars here and there, does not mean they will be the norm in the very near future.

Tech and science "leaders" are well known for their missing the mark both in their short/mid term, and long term prophecies. Will there be significant advancements in that direction? Sure, but that does not mean driverless trucks are a threat to the trade tomorrow. It still seems some confuse the terms "self-driving" and "driverless". Nobody denies vehicles will develop short term "auto-pilot technology", but that is a far cry from large vehicles traveling across great spans with no human in the control seat.

And excuse me if I don't place a lot of stock in what some "visionaries" say. They are in the business of attracting money and investment and they can't do this without making wild claims and that these wild things will happen "tomorrow" if only they can convince enough investors [to live ridiculous lifestyles in the mean time]

I put the Ray Kurzweil's of the world in the same lot as Global Climate Catastrophe "scientists" who work to manipulate news media outlets before it becomes obvious they are/were wrong and lose their forward momentum towards their goal of absolute centralized control of global industry and energy production and development.

Ok all well and good, but let's be clear that the rate computational technology is advancing is not the same as the collective opinion or perspective from scientists who specialize or weigh in on climate change. One is advancing rapidly regardless at an exponential rate and that is indisputable. The fact that it will give us more ability to use it to include automation of many tasks done by people today is quite reasonable to assume since it has already happened in may industries. So when that computational ability doubles, quadruples, doubles again etc. you see the potential. Just take a penny and double it each day for 30 days like 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, etc. and see what you will have at the end of the month. This is what will happen with technology. Add to this if you will our increased ability in the biological field and truly amazing things will come to be.
Regarding any change in the climate is not the same as pollution is not increasing at an exponential rate. Nevertheless, basic physics, Newtons 3rd Law, will tell you that changing the levels of the mix in the atmosphere is likely to have an effect. The fact is we are helping to increased gases in our atmosphere with carbon dioxide, methane, nitros oxide, and chlorofluorocarbons. How much this extra gases we are contributing to the natural process is what is largely debated, but there is a general consensus it is having a warming effect over time even if it has not been dramatic in many people eyes. A small change can have larger consequences so they conclude.
Overall, there is not question we will have much more advanced technological capability in the not too distant future, say 15 years or so, and it will give us the ability and opportunity to do many things including how we drive and transport goods. I, for one, hope it will also help us manage our environment as well so we have less pollution instead of more because that almost certainly would be a positive thing.

    *Grumbles.

They can robot all they want to. But like one poster said, one idiot terrorist running wild at 70 can set up a no win and force the robots to really close the interstate in many places at once. We will be sorry.

Where is the posiitive then? OH yea. The Uber truck business via a app, whistle up a big robot, toss the stuff into the back slam the doors shut.

Who you gonna blame when it's late to a appt time? Not the robot. It does not care anymore what little mean games humans play at the docks coming and going. Would that be wonderful.

You say that like that doesn't already happen. It's about reducing accidents not eliminating them.

This idea of a "stand by" driver is not going to work. Sure, all of us will pay close attention to the truck at first but after 6 months we will all be watching Netflix, sleeping or worse. So it either needs to be full automation or very little.
You can't and shouldn't expect people to do basically nothing for hours on end and then come to the rescue when the truck fails.

I use to fear autonomous trucks a lot more than I do now. For one, the issue of liability is massive and the majority of Congress are lawyers so liability won't stop with drivers, we don't have enough money. Those rules have a long time and many Supreme Court battles to go before they are codified. Then, I think these tech companies are engaged in a simple propaganda. I think they know that the tech is far away and promote these so called success's as a way of staying relevant.

Autonomous trucks are coming folks. Think of a company that has 10000 drivers each making 40k a year avg. That's a savings of 4 hundred million a year after initial investment of trucks. Plus less dead head and routing through the house. (Robo truck doesn't mind sitting waiting for a load or want to go home to see the family like you) give it time.

Uber has already come out with self driving taxis in Philly, and has big plans for the future.

I think about this alot- WHEN they are able to make a robot just as smart as a human....what job could it not do? What job is safe? How will we divide money with no one working? And what will be the point of humans even existing if robots are doing all our jobs??

Consider this; losses in manufacturing jobs is more to do with automation than outsourcing

Some day they probably will Lucy but it won't be a robot it will be humanoid. And from this day human race will be fkd.But this is going to take a lot of time.I did a little of HVAC work and as much as I can imagine driverless trucks I cannot imagine a robot replacing furnace and air conditioner at your house.
