My insurance broker dropped a bomb. He was suppose to add workers comp to my package but he forgot, now as I am doing a new carrier app with shipping brokers I am now just finding out that workers comp. is not included in my package. I am basically paying $12,000 in insurance premium for only the cargo an Auto liability.
Is this going to hinder me getting a contract with some shippers? What are the risk of not having workers comp? And for those that have workers comp. how much are you guys paying for the premium.
Thank you.

holly balls!
You need to have all kinds of paperwork in the truck for mr, DOT to look at. The comp answer depends on your business situation. its not a yes or no answer. But yes is better for you if your guy gets hurt.

Depending on your state of residence you maybe able to get Occupational Accident Insurance instead of Workmens Comp, and it is cheaper. NY requires Workmens Comp, but most other states only require occupational accident. You may want to pursue a different insurance broker.
swiff and CondoCruiser Thank this. -

First driver that gets their flipflop hung in step could destroy your business. You need to do some better planning and preparation to protect yourself. If your insurance company did not provide what you asked I would be shopping around, they are just a problem waiting to happen.

It's not cheap! There are different classifications for drivers. I think general freight is $10.88 per $100 of payroll. Now you see why many companies force per diem on their drivers. It lowers the payroll amount.
Here's the NY WC manual in pdf format.

Down here in FL my quote was $18 per $100 in wages. $10 seems affordable
