Hi all, I stumbled across this forum after looking into trucking. What would you do? I am looking to get real insights from truckers.
I am 30, not the sharpest tool in the shed, tried and failed college (Bachelor in Business - useless), and have been unemployed for a year. I really don't have many options left. CDL seems like the only real path for no rent, stability, and decent pay.
What is the best path in CDL nowadays? I think OTR or doing beverage is the only realistic route.
I should not that I have moved 4 times in the last year and need stability.
My background:
My 3 options:
- 3.5 years experience in Banking (anti-money laundering)
- Currently working corrections at $72k
- Remote finance job - 18 month contract, $24/hr, ~$50kish gross - $770 a week!!. After tax and $30k in expenses I am left with almost zero savings. No real shot at going permanent, and honestly my industry (AML) is pretty much dead. I am also sort of blacklisted from it.
- Stay in corrections - $72k salary, stable but not where I want to be. Not the best communicator (Not the best personality match). Really ####ing dangerous.
- Get my CDL
Worth getting into trucking at 30? What would you do?

nextgentrucker, 48Packard, Sons Hero and 1 other person Thank this. -
Which state do you live in?
You'll need an address for your cdl.
You're a good match for OTR.notahotshot2026 Thanks this. -
Hi China,
Thank you for your reply.
I am in Washington state. I received my wisconsin class c a few months ago.
I am not sure if it would be easier to do sponsored CDL in wisconsin or paid CDL school.
I have 30k in savings I can use.
If you don't have the chance to reply, have a great day. -
When will your Class-C be 12 mos. old?
Most companies want it to be 12 mos. old.
You can still apply though and maybe luck out. -
I have had a valid license for over 10+ years just switched from Florida drivers license to Wisconsin.
It is about 3 months old. I did not think it had to be 12 months? -
You're OK then. You've had a Class-C for over 10 years; doesn't matter which state or multiple states it's from.
Hiring companies go with which state your license is from to determine if you're in the hiring area or not. -
The 12 mos. unemployment will hurt you for some companies. If there's a problem with this, then apply with Wisconsin WIOA Program and the state will pay for private CDL school.

Go ahead and apply with some company cdl schools right now.
