You paid how much for a truck?

New truck: Everything is new. The structural components haven't been stressed at all, all the wiring is new and not hacked to #### by the moron who owned it before you. Apart from dealing with emission equipment, which fyi isn't going anywhere, you have a lot less of the little things to nickle and dime you (generally speaking of course. There's always a lemon in every bunch). If you're just starting out and plan to make a long term career out of this, someday you WILL have to deal with EGR, DPF, SCR etc. Either due to government regulations or simply because these pre EGR engine blocks will have so many hours worth of stress on them that they become boat anchors essentially.

Not saying you can't find a decent used truck that was looked after as they are out there. I look at a lot of trucks and heavy equipment on Kijiji and most of the trucks I see in the $15-20k US (probably around $25k in Canuck bucks) is honestly someone else's worn out junk that I wouldn't go near with a 15 foot pole. I generally don't start seeing anything I would consider "decent" until I hit the $40-60k Cdn range.

 

Buy a 2 year old truck with about 250000 miles on it, that truck did not spend much time at the dealer getting "fixed".

"nickel and dime" stuff does not bankrupt truck owners, the down time accumulated due to multiple thousand + dollar emissions repairs break an owners back; whether they are "covered under warranty" or not.

 

Finding a used truck set up the way I need it though is almost impossible. So I have no choice but to go new. Besides its a tool for the job and will be kept for a long time. Besides Im pretty particular about my truck I guess. Found a couple decent ones that could have been made to work but the work involved plus the "used" portion of the truck was just a turn off compared to the $$'s being saved

 

Buy new.
Mantain it to your higgest standards.
Your set for God knows how many years.

 

I was at a receiver the other day, learning the ropes (before I buy).

Beside us was a cabover I have seen multiple times (drooled over her thru out)

My friend has the white 2007 Century with 1.2 million miles and drives all over lower 48. He paid $15K cash for that 2 years ago. He had brought frozen load from Texas to VA.

To our right, was 6 waaaay newer "fancier" rides....but I could not help but wonder out aloud that after all said and done....all them lined up trucks were earning about $2/mile on average.

He was like.."naahh.. my avg is $3/mile". So I'm like "huh???"

His rationale: all these new/shiney trucks have $2000+/mo notes. When they can't secure good loads, they end up accepting 1.20/mile loads just to pay fuel/note. End result, everyone suffers.

Plus, he gets to grab desperate broker loads, that newer trucks cannot deliver due to whatever issues. He spent 3 days at my house teaching me everything to look for in a detroit series 60....so I'm in the hunt now

250,000 in 2 years means it is a reliable unit, if the price is right this is probably a sound choice.

The thing is you never know. I have seen trucks with 200k miles eating a gallon of oil for every 1000 miles. You get them to do warranty repairs and end up sitting for two months losing revenue. If you got cash and some time, get a $15k pre egr truck, put $35k in it and you will have a more reliable truck than $80k Cascadia

 

That's the stupidest thing I read so far. Just because I have a 2000 dollar monthly payment doesn't mean I will pull 1.20 mile freight. A smart business owner doesn't just go and buy a new truck because he feels like it he buys it because he doesn't pull 1.20 freight.
