Hoping someone can shed some light on this as I’m booking my truck into Peterbilt tomorrow that hopefully will be covered on the warranty I purchased when buying the used truck. The motor had an in-frame done by Cummins at 600,000 km and there’s 1.2 million on it now. It’s not deleted.
This is going to be long post, but I’ve got a bunch of things going here that are hopefully going to add up to something that makes sense...so bare with me as I explain.
I’ve owned the truck about 9 months now. Couple days before I brought the truck home from the private dealer I bought it from, it was into the Pete dealer for some sensor recall on the aftertreatment...they also apparently either cleaned the particulate filter or put in new. I did a turbo actuator a month later. Fuel mileage didn’t seem so bad at first, 5.5 MPGs or so...that was in summer and fall. I’m way up in Canada here so winter fuel mileage is already crap...lucky if I’m getting 4.5 mpg, but mostly 4. I pull deck driving the BC mountains quite a lot and the types of loads are various....lotsa oversized, structural steel, Komatsu parts, you name it. Anyways, I still feel like fuel mileage should be better...I’d be happy with a consistent 5, sometimes a get it.
As for faults, I’ve gotten IMAP sensor which a swapped out a couple months ago...popped it out a couple weeks ago as the fault came back for a couple hours and disappeared, but it was pretty black already.
I’ve also gotten a turbo inlet temperature fault that lasts up until I pull over and dynamite the brakes so I can actually check the fault...disappears within seconds of that.
And now for the infamous Trap 1 particulate pressure which I get the most, then the derate if the truck won’t allow me to do a manual burn. It doesn’t feel as though it’s derating on me, still lots of power and it’s not asking me for a burn...it just seems to let me do a parked one once the derate fault lights up but not before with just the trap 1 code. The ability to do a manual burn has now ended....the trap 1 is just stuck on now. I felt like it was doing a burn rolling down the highway the other day cause I think I can smell it and I’m pretty sure it’s using DEF (it was a short trip home and I got sidetracked on the phone for awhile not paying much attention to it lol), but still the trap 1 fault.
Now I get it...I probably gotta plugged filter. But there’s more...my chrome stacks are black. My pilot driver last week told me it was just small puffs of black smoke between shifts, but nonetheless, still black coming out. I also get vibration at certain speeds during engine brake...the jake is a 3 stage and I’m mostly into 3. If I split it down and bring RPMs up, vibration is less or goes away. Drive shafts/universals seem fine so wondering if something is going on with my turbo.
So between all the faults, paying particular attention to the turbo inlet temp, bad MPGs, IMAP sensor getting carboned up so soon, black smoke, the vibration...what’s happening here? Is this all related or pure coincidence? I get that the particulate fault is likely it’s own issue, but I still had to include it in my post so all the info is here. Do I maybe gotta bad turbo going on? Bad injectors? Needs the valves set? Maybe I’m running rich on fuel?
    Thanks in advance.

    Also, I should add that...
The idea is to get the Trap 1 diagnosed at Peterbilt and hopefully my warranty covers that as it states the aftertreatment is listed as covered.
The motor is covered as well as the turbo, so if there’s more going on here than just the DEF system, such as the turbo, injectors, or whatever, I get them corrected. And then seriously take a delete into consideration as my used dealer told me they’ve gotten warranty work done even on a deleted truck (gotta couple hundred thousand km left under warranty).
A delete could be right up my alley, because I’m not interested in dealing with DEF issues all the time, but obviously there could be something going on with my truck here that obviously a delete isn’t going to correct.

For black smoke to come out the stacks it will have to have a cracked/breached dpf.
Vibration when jaking could just be jake rockers and not related to the dpf at all.

    SAR and spsauerland Thank this.

Ok thanks...researching the black pipes, someone said possibly running rich on fuel and talked about a bad turbo speed sensor. My pilot brought up the turbo as well when talking about the vibration....there’s none when the jake is off.
Something is going on though so hoping to find out tomorrow at Peterbilt.
Thanks for taking the time to answer.
