I have a Taurus 709 as my CC, and a full size Ruger P95 for home use. I moved away from Glock when the one I had (issued, really) keep having misfires and was a complete PITA the keep clean. (Just my 2 cents)

But I will say this. If you want a weapon for home use, I would look at a .40 instead of a 9mm. Ammo is still plentiful, but it's got more stopping power per shot then a 9, with only a slight increase in kick. I've been thinking about giving the 709 to my wife and getting a 740. Same make/size, just using different caliber ammo.

Having lived in Minneapolis for 25 years, and having been the victim of police brutality by MPD(at the hands of a Black cop, ironically), I can testify that you don't need to be doing anything at all to end up eating pavement.

The entire force does need a severe overhaul, but that raises the question as to why the uber-leftist city and state governments--the only people that can actually make that happen--haven't done it by now? o_O

Seriously? Why don’t you try telling that to the relatives of those who were injured or killed (and OBEYED POLICE DEMANDS)and see what kind of response you get.

If you are looking for strictly hone defense, and have a sizable amount of acreage around your home (country living), go for a shotgun. Seriously. A 12 gauge slide action with hollow point slugs or 00 buckshot is the LAST word in home defense.

People walk away from handgun rounds all day long. Never saw anyone continue to be a threat after a half pound of lead was delivered at high speed to the center chest region. Plus, you have a solid hunting platform!

Shotguns are the hands down most versatile firearms on the market. Hunting, home defense, target and sport shooting...a solid shotgun can handle them all. AMD a solid Mossberg (like my own) can be had for far less than a midrange quality hand gun.

If you are looking for every day carry, you have a LOT of research ahead of you! Semi-auto vs. revolver, largest caliber you can COMFORTABLY handle, which type of carry will you practice most often: open carry vs. conceal carry and most important: THE LAWS OF YOUR HOME TURF!

My first stop would be a gun range with a good, solid reputation AND an NRA certified instructor. And your local Sheriff's office.

I practice both open and concealed carry. I hold a PA License to Carry, and PA is an Open Carry state (outside of Philadelphia). Which means I can carry openly without a license with some exceptions.

I like the Ruger American Service because it is a solid weapon. But it is a bit large for a conceal carry. I get away with it because I'm 6'2" and weigh anywhere between 240 and 260 lbs. I'm a pretty big guy. So hiding a full sized (or service sized) handgun is not that difficult for me. Depending on your build, you may need something smaller.

And ignore the Bigger is Better crowd when it comes to caliber. More people die from a well placed .22LR than from a panic shot .45ACP. Training and shot placement mean far, FAR more than packing the biggest blasted p e nis extender you can find.

Not enough people vote in local elections, thats true. But most law enforcement leaders are not elected.

But when the Federal Government subsidizes military equipment for local law enforcement but won't subsidize training and community involvment, thats a problem.

When departments agree to enact reforms in response to malfeasance , then do not follow through, thats a problem.

When poor and minority voters experience vote dilution, thats a problem.

I think you missed the point of Steve's account - the National Guard acted professionally while local law enforcement rolled up like a mob.

You're right. I wasn't paying attention. That being said, the local police have it right and the National Guard need to get with the program.
