It looks that way on the surface yes but it really isn't (at least its not supposed to anyway) under per diem you would have to compare your NET take home income instead of gross income because of the tax differences between standard and per diem.
You also have to keep in mind that they can't apply per diem for all of your miles, the per diem pay only affects the first $59 per day of your pay (not taxed)..after you've gone over that, then you are paid at the standard rate.

Yes it is very confusing which is why most don't like it, however, I somewhat understand it and I have seen the tax benefit of it in my paychecks (with another company I drove for awhile back). At least under per diem, we do not have to save every single darn receipt for the entire year to deduct on our taxes since we've already deducted it in per diem.
Yes the company also benefits from our tax savings as well, they do not have to pay taxes on that portion of our income either..

So when it comes right down to it, the "net" effect of per diem is that you would "take home" the same or more $$ as if you were earning the .36-.38cpm even though you are being paid .335-.355cpm for the first $59 worth of miles per day.

egads! Too early for this, head is spinning lol..hope I just didn't make it more confusing.. :/

Finishined orientation, got my truck and my first load. Miles on 1st load, not great but then I wasn't expecting it to be since it gets me to the house for 1.5 days to get my gear and get the truck the way I want it, clean freak lol. Does it bother me that they wouldn't bobtail me 300 miles home but instead have me take a load on the way? Not at all..it is a business and we BOTH are in it make money.. :) So far so good..

If you live in Wyoming where would you go for Marten orientation?? I'm looking at either Marten or May. I know either is not perfect, just looking for advice on taking the lesser of the two evils. Thanks!!

Go with Marten. Having worked for both, Marten is the better company. You plan your rout and fuel stops. Better pay and no BS on the truck. It will do 65 and they will never say a word to you for doing 75 down a hill. They also have APU's. May on the other hand will tell you ever little thing to do. And I mean EVERY thing. They will also make you pay them for idling the truck to stay cool/warm. You are just there to hold the steering wheel for them.

I average 2800 miles a week, never go west of I-25 and get home on time every time.
