Buying a new refrigerator

...from what I've read on this forum, recent posts indicate power inverters aren't allowed. That's why I'm looking into a portable generator, but that's going to cost me significantly more...what's more, I haven't the foggiest clue how I'm going to secure it to the truck, where I'm going to stow it while I'm not using it, or, more importantly, how I'm going to protect it from theft...

 

So that is why you spend $90 on a Coleman & rid yourself of trying to figure out how to do the impossible. I'm sure they wouldn't want you installing a generator either

 

A generator requires no installation in the sense of messing with the truck's electrical system, which is what I'm fairly certain they will be against (mods to the electrical system). And the generator wouldn't be just for the refridgerator...it's also for a laptop, TV, Xbox 360, and microwave. Basically, anything that requires enough power that the truck's internal electrical system can't supply or isn't innately compatible with (i.e. AC vs DC).

 

Swift does not allow inverters, unless they plug directly into the cig lighter plug.

The Coleman/Igloo products are thermo-electric units. They operate on the basis of providing cooling within a range (normally 40 degrees less than the ambient temperature) thus if its 100 degrees in the truck ... the best it will be is 60 degrees in the cooler.

There is another alternative and that is the Waeco CF-35 Portable Refrigerator/Freezer.

Its 33 qts, has a true thermostat that allows you to set any temp you want ... from 0 to 50 degrees.

It plugs in the cig lighter plug and even has a low voltage shut-off.

There are a few places that carry it ... and a few more that have it for around $225 ... versus the normal price of $529.

 

Depends on your company. U.S. and Hogan both were willing to pull furniture out of truck for me to put in my 2ft high fridge. And they stored my top bunk mattress so I could put storage containers up there for food and other stuff. You can bungee and velcro 3 or 4 containers from Wal-Mart up there and put away enough food that you can stay away from those #### truck stop restaurants and save some money. My wal-mart A/C fridge was $59.95 about 3 years ago and it's still working great.

Any Recommended Brands or Model's of Refrigerator's?

I'm still 6 months out from going OTR so I don't know what truck I'll be driving, but the companies that I'm interested in that allow inverters to power said refrigerators are using:

Freightliner Columbia's
Freightliner Cascadia's
Volvo's "unfortunately" not sure what model's

This thread could be useful to allot of drivers, so I'd like to start a list here.

When you get a truck take a tape measure to it, and then head for Home Depot.

 

I'm planning on it, I was just looking at prices/brands and to get a better idea of what I'm going to need.

I bought the one at walmart, ( refridgerator/ freezer) $99.00

 

Youll also need to figure out if youre going 120v with an inverter or 12v. I mentioned Home Depot because they list about a dozen truck size fridges on their website.
