So... let's say you've been driving for 11 hours and you're out of driving time. You decide you're gonna' utilize the 8/2 split and you take your 2 hours break right now. Okay... 2 hours go by... Question #1: That extends your driving time by exactly how much? How many more hours can you drive? Question #2: When you finally do take the accompanying 8-hours off after you're done driving... does that reset your 14-hour clock? Or must you absolutely have 10 CONSECUTIVE hours off in order to reset the 14-hour clock? Thanks.
If you driven your entire 11 hrs, the 8/2 is useless. You need a 10 hr break. The 8/2 is only effective if you have drive time left. Example" you drive 5 hrs. You park 2 hrs,, so you have the same 5 hrs prior. Let's say decide to 3 hrs after you've parked for 2 hrs. Next, you'll need to be in the sleeper for 8 hrs. When your 8 hrs is up, you'll have 8 hrs to drive, because you burned 3 hrs out of your 11 previously.
Once you use up your 11 you are done for 10 hours. 8/2 needs to happen when you stop with available hours, not AFTER you use them all up.
So after this example you gave... can you do the 8/2 split again after? As in, drive a few hours again, take 2 hours, then rest for 8 hours? Or MUST you follow up an 8/2 split with a full 10-hour break? Is there a limit on how many 8/2 splits you can do back to back?
Nevermind, I figured it out lol. Basically you get a ROLLING 14-hour period every time you complete the required 10-hour break (which must include at least a full 8-hours in the sleeper).
The split break does require that the longer period, whether you do 7/3 or 8/2, be in the sleeper. The normal 10 hour break does not specify how many hours, if any, that you are in the sleeper. Just has to be 10 consecutive hours off duty and/ or sleeper.
So if I'm at a shipper and I'm on my 8 hour berth period and they kick me out prior to the completion I would have to complete a full 8 hour period again to remain in compliance if I PC down the road? I'm kinda stuck in that situation now.
Let's say you are 6 hours (SB) into an 8 hour split sleeper. If you PC out of the shipper, you need to complete a 10 hour in order to drive again. The 8/2 is shot. So that's 4 more hours.
