Has anyone been able to get hired on with Gemini Motor Transport?

They run ads in our local market about once a month or so. Can't be that busy....

 

From what I'm hearing everything sucks right now. It's bad everywhere.

 

The following assumes you have tanker experience -- but NO fuel hauling experience....

Suggestion: MAKE SURE fuel is actually a job you will like.

Since Gemini is a job that you keep -- find out for sure if fuel is really a good "fit" for you....by signing up with another fuel carrier that isn't quite so far up the food chain.

Find out elsewhere first...if you can stomach:

• Night shift/weekend shift schedules
• Working fuel on holidays
• Getting other drivers/cars/trucks off the fuel drops -- so you can actually do your job
• "Sticking" the tanks -- & then finding out you have too much fuel for the tank(s) in question
• Being hit on for money in the parking lot -- by total strangers
• Being pestered for silly little things by the safety guy (who....by the way....has never driven a truck)
• Getting your rig back in 12 hours or less -- for the next driver (aka, "slip seating")
• Delivering fuel to fenced-off, mud-bog construction zones/areas
• Delivering fuel in unfavorable/nasty weather
• And still yet other mostly moronic examples

If you can tolerate most of the above without becoming an active shooter -- Love's might love you....later on.

Thanks, been looking for local fuel jobs but a lot of them are requiring fuel hauling experience. What companies do you really recommend I try and look for?

 

Well, that depends....(in part) on where you are located.

Definitely a lot of competition in Vegas. I like what Lual suggested, go to less prestigious fuel hauling companies. Maybe something to the equivalent of Florida Tank Lines, Circle K, or something like that

I have yet to see a job ad for fuel hauling that required previous fuel experience from:

• Pilot/Flying J
• Circle K
• "Energy Dispatch" (aka, RaceTrac)

All of the above will offer you hourly pay -- plus overtime above 40 hours.

This is a more fair way to compensate a fuel driver, if said driver gets stuck with delays -- he/she is then still being paid FOR THEIR TIME.

If you can -- avoid carriers that pay strictly by the load -- with no minimum guarantee.

Note also: fuel will very likely have trucks that include driver-facing cameras. Put that cell phone where you can't reach it while driving!

Gemini isn’t the holy grail in the fuel world, but they are a solid place. Stupid easy work. Most of their truck stops up here in the NW have the hoses just sitting at the drops when you show up so you just get a veeder root printout and hook up their hoses and drop. Their drivers tend to be on the lazier side and drop the hoses a lot, or don’t care to change out gaskets, so their hoses also tend to leak more. Pilot drivers are the same way. I’d look to just get your foot in the door with whatever sector of the trucking world you want, then go from there and ask at the racks when you see trucks you’re curious about.

 

They are also on the lower end of the pay scale up here around Portland. They start at $34-36 an hour. If you’re willing to move to the NW they have openings in Millersburg down around Albany, and in Troutdale for night shift. They load a lot out of Conoco here in Portland. The Millersburg position is a 4 day workweek.
