Signing my log book

So a company driver told me not to sign my log book and print my name until the end of the day as it states I have endorsed everything entered, another driver told me it didn't really matter.

Would someone settle this for me please.

 

FMCSR answers that specific question in the big book. For your log book to be current it has to have a legibale signature.

 

Once you sign it it is a legal document. When you sign it you are saying that EVERY THING on it is true and accurate. DO NOT SIGN IT TILL THE END OF THE DAY!!! Until then it is just a piece of paper and you can make correction to it. You can even tear it out and start over again. Once you sign it you are stuck with what ever it says. Note that it does not say when you have to sign it. Just that you do.
§395.8 Driver's record of duty status(f)(7) Signature/certification. The driver shall certify to the correctness of all entries by signing the form containing the driver's duty status record with his/her legal name or name of record. The driver's signature certifies that all entries required by this section made by the driver are true and correct

Signed or not, It will get you a ticket if it's not up to snuff! I've heard the old BS story about not signing your log for many years and it's BS! The log must be filled out and accurate to your last change of duty status....If it's not, You get a ticket or shut down or whatever the infraction merits.

Do what you want but don't come here cryin' when it blows up in your face!

Common sense dictates that you must sign the document. Failure to sign the document invites a charge of a non current log book.

 

I sign mine the next day... after I get up... and after I've had my coffee. Of course, mine's on the computer so I can't technically sign it until it's printed.

 

11 years, perhaps a dozen looks at my log book over the period.

I've never signed it until the end of the day, and it's never been an issue. As long as I'm current on the grid, it's been fine.

POE, Wyoming (don't recall which one)...had the date, load info, and other pertinent info filled in. Nothing on the grid. Zippo. No signature either. I was allowed to catch it up. That was during my first year of driving, and since then I've pretty much been current at every check.

Just my experiences.

So I think it comes down to this: Do you consider the log to be a "testimony" that you sign off to before filling it out, or is it a "document" that you affirm is true and correct by signing at the close of the day (or following your coffee the next morning)?

 

I have had 5 inspections in the last 2 years. I left the signature line blank on the current day EVERY TIME. I was legal and I have NEVER recieved a citation for it. This was is the states of TN, VA, MD, MS, and LA.

Maybe its not legal to sign it at the end of the day, but nobody has given me a ticket or warning for it.
