Is truck driving about $10 per hour?

It depends who you work for and what area of the country you live in. Our linehaul drivers at our east coast terminals make more than I do, while our linehaul drivers at our Cumberland, MD Roanoke, VA and Chaleston, WV terminals make less. Keep in mind that none of our drivers made the money I do just starting out. I have 10 years at my employer in April so I pretty much get to run the miles I want. I run a minimum of 2800 miles a week, most weeks though I am closer to 3000.

 

What did you make starting out?

How much more? How much less?

Also do they let you relocate to place close to the terminal you want to work at or do they make you work at terminal closest to you at the moment?

 

Im sitting on 55-60k a year. So I really cant complain, I'm home every other day and weekends, not too bad huh

 

I got lucky and was sitting in Reno waiting on a load and met an O/O at the Walmart. We talked for several weeks and he was needing a co driver. I told him I would love to drive for him, and I have been really learning and earning ever since.

 

My first year which started on April 30th I made $35,000.

The differences between our regions is only about 2-3% up or down.

You would have to relocate to the area of the terminal you wish to work at. You could hire on near where you live, and then try to transfer, but there would have to openings where you want to live, so it's easier just live where you want to work. We only have terminals in PA (7), NJ (Cherry HIll & East Windsor), OH (4), IN (Indy), MI (Battle Creek), MD (Baltimore), VA (Richmond & Roanoke), WV (Charleston), and IL (Chicago) so if you don't want to drive in snow, you won't want to work here. That is about the only downside of this job, we can't just pull over and take a nap if the roads are crappy, we have to keep going. Occasionally, very rarely (3 times in 10 years), the company will actually close a terminal where the weather is very bad, but it has to be a near blizzard such as the one we had roar through the midwest this week. We had 3-4 terminals closed down (mine included) Wednesday and Chicago stayed closed even yesterday.

 

Let me see, Drive a run down daycab (Making 90K-100K) Home every afternoon, Buy a $500K Home, $37K P/U truck, Many more toys Ect. Open road still calling? Forgot something, NO WEEKENDS WORKING.

 

Anyway I want to have a feel of the chance of getting a high paying job (linehaul, tanker, etc) after a year of experience, because I get the feeling that since there are a ton of drivers with a year or two of experience, they would all apply for these jobs which would make the competition fierce, no?

We don't live to far away from there. but we own our truck now. Just curious.

 

I don't think you can really average out a trucking job by the hour, you have way too much time out there to start killing your brain with those number. The best way to look at it is by the day or the week.

It might just depress you otherwise..
