I've got mixed emotions on this one.

I'm glad someone has recognized there is a problem, but at the same time I'm reminded of Ronald Reagan's speech about the 9 most frightening words.

"I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

I wouldnt get too excited. The big companies will do one of two things.
Squash this legislation in committee or make #### sure they collect any detention time and keep all of it from ever trickling down to the driver that actually got detained!

I have a feeling that the big companies are already getting detention time.

The last company I worked at, made it a big production to follow each and every step to the letter to get it. Miss one little thing and it would be denied.

After you had it figured out, they would then change the way to get it and not advise the driver. It would then be denied because proper filing was not done.

While I agree with you, the company driver has basically no recourse against the shippers and receivers, this will have an impact. And eventually the hold up's should lessen considerably, and hopefully, when someone is fatigued, and it is proven that they were held up by these guys, they will be held responsible too.

Honestly, all these regulations that are being passed, CSA2010, fatigue, sleep apnea, etc. Those aren't going to impact highway safety as much as something like this would. And think about being able to keep your HOS in tact, and run, vs. sitting on the clock to get loaded/unloaded. Ultimately you are responsible for that scnereo, even though you are being held hostage by the shipper/receiver. They need to have some responsibility in all of this. And I believe the only way to get them to shape up is to hit their pocket books. :yes2557:

Hitting them in their pocket book could have adverse effects.

How do you suppose they'll offset those costs by paying detention fees?

They certainly won't let it affect their bottom line. :biggrin_25512:

So in the end, much like an across the board wage increase for drivers and freight rates that's so badly needed, we're right back where we started because essentially we wouldn't be making anymore money. We'd be spending that extra money to pay for the products we use in our homes that went up in cost to cover the costs in shipping it.

while that's true Crow.....I personally have gotten to a shipper/reciever and been made to wait while there were open docks....there have been times I sat for 9 hours waiting for a dock...AND NOT GOTTEN DETENTION! No it's time these places get off their collective azzhats and start treating us with respect instead of like something they stepped in.....it's insulting enought that we have to PAY them to take their ###### freight off our wagons...the least they could do was be quick about it or pay for the time of ours they WASTED......when I sat for that 9 hours I told the lumper service I was going to deduct $20 bucks an hour for how long I sat...they sure as hell didn't like that

I agree Nik. I truly do. I've sat for 15 hours in a door without so much as being locked into the dock.

I'm just wondering if it's not going to just be a vicious cycle of robbing Peter to pay Paul..
