I had a 12.7 500 detroit with an 8LL and 4.10s. My friend had a 14.0 515 18 speed 4.10s. Both permited for 107,000 LBS. My little 12.7 would walk all over that 14.0. Even on 12% grades. That 14.0 515 just wouldn't run. He took it back to detroit several times and all was ok. He keep it one year and got rid of it.
Stars are nice trucks but have steel cabs. Their a little heavy and rust can be an issue. Their very well built. A lot of loggers hear in the north east use them because they hold up well hauling heavy off road.

I like mine a lot. The ride is good, and the cab is very solid. Lots of room in the cab and sleeper.

Mine is a 2004 with a C15. I drove a 2006 LowMax with at series 60 475hp. The 2000 FL Classic I owned before had a 430hp C12 and would outpull it. It got pretty bad fuel mileage too.

    They are a bit heavy.

I never thought I'd like a standup sleeper but that stratosphere sleeper is very nice. It's nice that you dont have to slam the doors to make them shut like you do on other truck makes. The only complaint I have is the mercedes motor, I bought it on the basis of getting good mileage...........but I'm not :biggrin_25510:

They are a little heavy, but your gonna have that when you build a qaulity item.

Get rid of the EGR our non EGR motors get good mileage for what we do and we work them hard.

I was watching American Loggers Fri. night and they were talking about 2 2008 Western Stars they have with C15's and how they are ALWAYS broke down lol. Said they sit more then they run and they're sick of it, had them towed back to the dealer and told the dealer to either put different motors in them or give them $100,000 in trade.

Dealer ended up trading them a new Western star with a detroit lol.

Not really related to this thread but I thought of it when you said you were a Cat man. I know Cat makes (made) a great motor, just not the Acert's.

^^^^ Yeah I watched that episode too. When they kept complaining about the motors in those trucks I expected them to be Mercedes LOL!!! If you look on truckpaper those trucks they traded in are still at the dealer.
