No company terminals = no hometime?

scope what pattyj says --- it is very common for carrier xyz to have drop yard at who knows what company ~ I just saw that a few days ago looking for work and that happens all over the place, you can dig on this forum and find new drivers asking where they can park their truck, very likely most of those are trying to park the truck withing driving distance of home .... very common but should ask about that and get statement in pre-screening

not all companies have a problem with you taking the truck homw with you
why limit yourself to companies that have multiple drop yards

I was just looking ahead. My son graduates from high school and leaves for the Marine Corps in June, and I DO NOT want to miss that.

 

Some companies if you live within150 miles will want you to park at the terminal rather than take your truck home. Living near or far from a terminal doesn't affect your hometime as much as if you live in or near one of their freight lanes.

 

Having a terminal doesn't have to be a big deal, having freight in your area is what will get you home just as easy. As long as you can take the truck home with you, some companies don't allow that. Having a terminal close is good though, because you can have maintenance done while you are at home instead of waiting for out to be done while you're on the road.

My first company's closest terminal was 300 miles away and I would almost always haul an empty trailer 150 - 200 miles home, drop the empty at a small truckstop and take the truck home....same with the second company. The company I'm with now has a terminal 3 miles from my house.....I drop the truck there when I go home for hometime and it's get washed for me...... and sometimes I get home during the week for my break..YEAH!!!

 

I work for a company with just one terminal and it is in Texas... I live in Delaware. Getting home is not really an issue bwcause they have freight that delivers and picks up near me. They just route me through there when I want home time.

Right now I am on a Denver to Philly run that will put me less than 50 miles from home. However since I was just home two.weeks ago for 7 days, I am planning on staying out a little longer so not stopping in this trip, but when I am ready, I just make a call to.my.DM about two weeks in advance.

 

Oh, I understand why you asked.....its a great question. I am still at the wannabe stage. I have been in the same job for 15+ years and quite bored. The money is great, but that's not all there is to lifend the road has been calling me for years. At 50, I am not getting any younger.

 

I detest drivers that abandon their trailer @ truckstops so they can bobtail home. I also detest facilities that allow this to happen.

Put your big boy pants on and find a proper place to park while you're @ home. Don't take a needed/wanted parking spot away from a fellow driver.
