I'll take my over-priced tri-pac over your cobbled together attempt any day of the week. There are features a tri-pac can do your set-up will never have the ability to do. Diesel engine, bunk heater, ac, controller features, engine heater. Put all that together and seriously compare prices, you will invest nearly enough to have purchased a tri-pac. And you still jave to fart around all the time with dual fuels, figuring out a mounting/case for that homejob.
I have to go with you on this one..I have a Rigmaster...JUNKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK...I had the whole generator set up....SUCKEDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD.. I was using a friends truck and he has the Tri-Pac....What a great set up.Performance was Excellent and very quite.....
A tripac is very expensive for a new one, and most used ones have problems after problems. A new tripac cost approx. 8K and then still burns 4-6 gallons a night(10 hour break) only saving 2-3 gallons over the big engine. That's 8-12$ saving per night. Average tripac takes 3-4 years to brake even if your using it 250 nights per year. That same tripace will have 6-8 thousand hours on it before your even in cost saving without any problems. Yes there are really nice units to use. And have a lot of nice features. But for a new owner operator needing to save every penny, come on. Even the rig Master is a great unit when it new, even when it's less than 3 years old. But find a great used one for less than 3 thousand. Or a new one under 6 thousand. Seriously I have bought a used one a few years back. Thought it shouldn't have to many problems, showed approx. 3000 hours on it. And it worked good for 6 months, then computer problems and sensor problems. Then over heating and oil leaking problems. I beleive the most cost saving way is a gas generator just big enough to do the job.

Another option is to modulate your idle time so it's kept to a minimum. Automated solutions are available for doing this on Cummins, Detroit, and probably CAT. Detroit: Opti Idle (Optimized Idle) "Optimized Idle is a patented system designed to monitor the engine temperature, cab temperature and battery voltage and then stop and start the engine when the truck is parked as necessary," he explains. "In overnight idle situations, it reduces idling time by about 50%." Cummins: Icon (Idle Control) "The ICON Cab Comfort system is designed to automatically control engine starting and stopping when the truck is parked in order to reduce excess idle time, control the temperature in the cab and maintain the engine in a ready-to-start condition". ICON™ is available for use on the N14 CELECT™ Plus, M11 CELECT Plus, ISM, ISX, and Signature platforms. PDF Brochure Many truck salvage yards have parts trucks with this technology installed. I've used both systems, and found them to be a good solution for those not wanting to drop $10k on an APU, but can't afford to idle all the time. At least with this solution you could possibly retrofit your rig with some used electronics, and reduce your idle time significantly. My favorite system is the Detroit Opti-Idle. Combined with my Webasto bunk heater, the combination makes idle-time a much less costly variable in your P&L's each month.
i cant believe i am actually disagreeing with you, you are an inspiration on this forum i had a tripac, wonderful system, but i will take my "rube goldberg" contraption over for under $1,000, however, i am impressed by the honda EU3000 mentioned above
