No you won't get a message on the device saying it needs an update. Just start up Garmin Express, select the appropriate gps device you have previously registered and updated via usb (first thing after you bought it ideally), and it will tell you if there is an update. If there is, then connect the gps to the computer and initialize the update.

And you DO NOT need to pay for updates or newer maps if you have a device with a post-fix of L** ('L' meaning lifetime prepaid) such as Dezl 760 LMT (lifetime maps and traffic)

Yea mine pops up under the messaging app when there's an update I guess it gets it from the Bluetooth connection to my phone data for the weather

Ok, well I don't have an android device so I've never had mine "hooked up" to the internet for it to be able to check. And I doubt most average users will ever use that feature, anyway. So my advice is to check via the Garmin Express app every month or 2 if you don't connect via bluetooth data.

I recently upgraded my traffic receiver (power cord) to "HD Traffic" (from the out-of-box analog style) and like it much better.

I thought maybe garmin sent a signal from the satellite and it popped up right on the screen. But what do I know?

I also don't take advantage of the bluetooth link for updates and weather because mine has trouble finding my I-phone everytime after loosing the connection like when I take my phone out of the truck. Always have to manually make it look and find so I don't bother anymore.

I beleive the traffic does come from the satellite though.

I had the same problem before the last firmware update but its rock solid now with my droid RAZR HD and the traffic comes from the power cord the only signal coming from the satellites is the positioning information garmin has no way of transmitting anything via the satellites
