Good one....theres always a "correct way"...then there is the way you have to do it to be safe. My uncle taught me take as much room as you need to , but always try and get yourself set-up way ahead of the time you'll actually be making a turn. Not too hard to do actually , all it takes is paying attention , one thing that will always need to be 1st on a drivers mind. Just like backing -up...if at all possible when you have to make a pull-up...pull-up far enough to see all around you...make that pull-up count....a little free advice there plankton.....

i take up both lanes. keeping my trailer end more to the right so no cars can get past me. even doing this, dumb cars will try to sneak on both sides of you. just have to keep your eyes really open doing this turn.

Suppose there is bumper to bumper traffic? There are a couple 2 left hand turns that I will stay on the inside.Thats Texas when you're getting back on the interstate from the service road and a turn here if going to the Pilot because less then a forth a block there is the Pilot. But otherwise i'll use the outer lane, left and right turns.

So that's the outside lane correct?

To all, and especially Tony, I too was told to use all that YOU NEED, which is what i have been doing for well, since I started. We all "know" the laws regarding proper lane positioning, however, the 4 wheelrs, and hell, even some 6, 10 wheelers seem to know nothing at all when it comes to us making WIDE TURNS. We do as is needed and warranted at the time.
I have been in many industrial parks, that have one wide thru fare, down to a single lane to the right or left, I think we have all seen them. In my job of making 2 deliveries, with a day cab, 53 foot trailer, in Chinatown and then "southie" in downtown Boston, you had better believe that I take ALL THE ROOM that I need. I even at times, MUST climb up and ONTO traffic islands, to make my turns, all thanks to "sudden construction sites". Never, in any major city or industrial park, or super highway in California, either, have I ever been "pulled over" and spoken to by a uniformed official greeter of the state, city or town, where he or she presented me with a "gift certificate" that I would have to pay for.
Like Frank Sinatra's song, "I did it my way", fits me, and me alone, all others? Do as YOU NEED TO!BostonTanker, dptrucker and plankton Thank this. -
Just all depends on the situation, I found out a long time ago, there are only a couple of absolutes in this business.
