Setting Up Residence In Another State

For those of you who don't know me, I am a Prime PSD student currently awaiting a trainer. As an Illinois resident, I have a unique problem of being required to take all of the CDL tests again in IL to transfer my license when I get it.

Wanting to avoid this issue, and since I've been wanting to leave IL anyway, I'm looking into getting set up as a resident elsewhere. So what requirements are there to be legally recognized as a resident of another state? I have a brother living in Texas, so could I use his address as mine? I'd be taking home time there sometimes anyway. Or I could rent some cheap cruddy apartment here in Springfield. If I went this route I don't want to spend much because I wouldn't even see the place very often, and I want to save up money to buy a house somewhere. Until I get that house, I'll be taking my home time either with my brother or my parents, who I lived with until leaving for school, so I'm looking to do the absolute minimum needed to meet the legal requirements for being a resident of MO or TX.

 

You need to call the state your moving to and ask the DMV what the requirements are. Once you have a license your a legal resident of the state so give them a call instead of 300 replies from people who have no idea. Go right to the source.

 

In my experience, you establish residency by getting a DL. Getting a DL requires a house or apartment. A lease for the apartment or tax bills and or electric bills for a house.

 

Most states require you to 'live' there for 30 days before you become a legal resident. They also require proof of residency, such as a hotel bill, copy of a lease, etc. Some also require a copy of a utility bill addressed to the same address that you use for your state ID card (CDL). Check the requirements of the state that you are thinking of moving to. Another thing to consider is personal income tax. Some states do not require you to pay state income tax. Some of the ones that I know of are Texas, South Dakota, Oregon and maybe New Hampshire?

 

Call the DMV!!!! End of story!

 

You'll need stuff to show you're living there. i used storage unit agreement and credit card bill as proof in Arizona. And pay check stub and storage invoice in Kentucky.

 

Ask the DMV in Texas. Probably just need a lease agreement with your brother that you lease a room from him. You can Google for some simple lease form and print it. I'd take Texas over MO due to no personal income taxes in Texas.

 

I'm lost.... Where are you getting your CDL? Normally you have to have 30 days residence and a permanent address to be a resident of a state. Maybe I'm missing something here but if you have your CDL why would you have to retake the tests?

 

If you move to Iowa you have to take the written test again for a cars drivers license! I failed the first time because I knew nothing about drivers under 18 like how many can I have in the car. How late can I drive and so on.
