At any given moment, OOIDA is suing about half of the trucking world. Filing a lawsuit is one thing, winning one is another. As for your claims that Landstar takes excessive deductions, I suspect that you would find that they only take the deductions that you already agreed to in the contract that you signed with them. Ypu are the only person I heve ever heard say that they are getting .55 cpm and paying for your fuel out of that. Just doing the numbers, if you are paying 2.85 a gallon for fuel and getting 6 mpg, you are paying 47.5 cpm for fuel alone. And does the other 7.5 cpm cover the rest of your expenses and your profit adequately?

If you are accepting cheap freight, then that's a questionable business decision, but I haven't heard of any company, much less Landstar, offering 55 cpm and getting anyone to start the truck for that money.

I will admit, you are probably the only 2 million mile owner operator that I know of who will pull a load for 55 cents pr mile. That's an experience that very few people can claim.

 

And my friend, if you plan on making it a habit of repeatedly attacking me and my credibility here, I would at least ask you to do so in clear concise English. Neither I, nor anyone else here, should have to work their way through poor quality verbiage to find the basics of the issue. Type slowly and carefully, put in punctuation in the places where you would normally take a breath, and don't be afraid to use a capital letter at the beginning of a sentence, or a period followed by a space at the end of one.

Just remember the basics they taught you during those 3 years in 4th grade and you'll be all right.

 

OOIDA is NOT suing Landstar over fuel surcharges. There are four specific charges being levied, and they do not involve ths issue of fuel surcharges.

The alleged charges are:

1.) Failing to disclose information required by the regulations in its lease agreements with owner-operators;

2.) Overcharging owner-operators for fuel and transaction fees related to the purchase of fuel;

3.) Failing to disclose and unlawfully deducting amounts related to military shipments;

4.) Unlawfully overcharging for base plates and permits issued by the states


As to your charges that Landstar owns company trucks, you are obviously confused. Landstar does allow Agents to own trucks, and in fact that is how many people become associated with the company to begin with, and what makes it so strong. I worked with one agent personally in Kingsport, Tn. for most of a decade, who looked out for me and saw that my trucks did okay.

I don't know what the real deal is here, but Landstar doesn't haul 55 cpm freight. I've run into many people over the years that couldn't deal with their system. Some people just can't do things for themselves, and need someone to call every day for direction. Landstar will accomodate those kind of people as well, if that's what one needs.

Most of what OOIDA is going after them for will not pan out, in my opinion. In fact, it's overdue for an update on OOIDA's site....it was supposed to go to court in April.

I didn't want to mention that since fuel surcharges are a relatively new thing, there is little chance that any company has been been doing anything with fuel surcharges for the past 10 years. But, maybe he will listen to info from someone else. I seem to have inadvertantly poisoned the well here. Ah well, you can't win them all.

I also wondered how Landstar and their agents were managing to fill the seats of these company trucks since they obviously couldn't advertise for drivers. I would think toat at least one of their owner operators would have noticed an ad hiring company drivers and asked what that was about.

I know some of the agents do have their own trucks.Their husband is driving some of them from, what I've been told once.
They also have a system that can "follow you" and call when loads that fit "YOUR" criteria come up on the board.It will call.
My husband works there .I must say at the present time,I don't have any complaints.
Thats exactly what I do everyday....Look for loads.Load fuel card,Check mileages...Ect.
You yourself pick the load.If you are making bad choices,then thats on you.

Yep, there are agents that also own trucks, and they run these trucks as a lease unit to Landstar. But that is different from what was claimed, that Landstar owns the trucks, and makes efforts to hide it by "giving" them to the agents to run. In the case of these agents that own trucks, they have two separate, but very compatible businesses.

In your case, from what you describe, it works out really well, because instead of hubby losing time to stop and check the boards, he has you able to do that remotely for him and inform him of what you have found. And that means that your husband ust spend very little time sitting between loads.

But I highly doubt that you are hauling anything at the numbers that were being bandied about, .55 cpm for hauling a load. If you were, I highly doubt that you would be able to aford an regular isp connection.

I've never driven for them, but have read extensivelyt on them since they are a frequent subject on a couple of other boards, and in fact have some 'sticky" posts since they are such a frequent topic on those boards. It's a different system from what many drivers are used to, and more of an intermediate step between being a leased driver and being a full independent under your own authority. Some people prosper, as you apparently do, and some flounder under their system.
