True that. If it isn't profitable or fun, don't do it :biggrin_25525:

I wonder will they develop together with navistar an absolutly new 15-16l engine ,or will use current maxxforce big bore?I think 12,4l isnt enough for a severe duty truck which they intend to do

What i understand is that they will be offroad trucks not on highway, and i dont think CAT will use a MAN (maxxforce) engine as that would just be pure un-american.

I supose the offroad trucks must corespond to the same epa2010 norms. If they in the end will go for maxxforce there is a V8 16l diesel in MAN range which originaly was projected for SCR(weight isnt the most important issue in offroad trucks),or made an 16l on 12,4l base ,like volvos D13/16

Off road use has different duty cycles, long periods of heavy loading, followed by light loads, not like highway use where heavy loads all the time kill mileage. The only time sustained heavy loads are encountered on the highway is when you are climbing a mountain

The ACERT engine was designed to do both, without EGR, the Maxx Force engine is doing some things to help solve the durability issues of the turbos and is also using multiple pulse fuel injection and EGR to meet the 2010 rules.

The engine is designed to make more power with less displacement, through use of stronger materials, and other design innovations.

It's too bad about the Cat engines not being available for on highway trucks, I think they would have solved the problems given enough time.

in Europe 12,4l make 540hp with SCR.
For offhighway norms CAT will use the same acert techonology ,maybe without CGI ,hope they will workout all the gremlins till 2011

Once again, CATERPILLAR being a engine and machine manufacturer, i doubt they would use someones engine and put their name on it.

What they need to do is bring back the 3406E, C15, and especially the C16 and put a bullet in every tree huggers head. :biggrin_2554: CAT will live on with true enthusiasts like myself and a few other i know, as long as there are parts availability the 14.6 and 15.8 blocks will live on..... We have a long time before that happens.... Then there is the aftermarket.

No doubt about that, the power, reliability, and simplicity of the pre 2003 motors will never be beat! I just need to get mine on the dyno already to make some jaws drop at the CAT house, with the way stuffs going might be sooner than later.
