I dropped by the SAIA barn where I went to school, they had 5 ads up for drivers at that time. "Oh no, we don't need anybody. And we don't hire out of school." Then he tells me that they're really strict, just fired a guy for reaching for something while driving.
The ads were taken down next time I looked, but were back up when I passed my test. I had sort of a bad taste in my mouth about SAIA from when I had gone to another barn to ask if they'd hire someone out of school and the TM wouldn't even get up from his desk to meet me, just yelled stuff to the lady at the counter to tell me, she's trying really hard not to roll her eyes.
That was right before the cameras were installed, shortly after that there were driver ads up for that barn.
The LTL companies can be their own worst enemies at fending off potential employees. I've been to 3 barns of a certain company; at one location I think I interrupted a drug deal, at another I wasn't allowed by office staff to talk to the TM even though I knew from an insider that he needed drivers, and at another one was told they wouldn't take entry level drivers even though what I was asking about was advertised as an entry-level position on the site.
This has been said here a bunch of times, thank you to all who took time to educate me: Every location is different, and visiting the location is helpful in determining if you want to work there. If the TM will take time to speak with an inquiry off the street they probably will have patience and a positive attitude when you're having a bad day as a driver.
Is it true about Saia and OD?

If some of the drivers have corvettes, then the job probably pays ok.speedyk and Bob Dobalina Thank this. -
A few years ago, I went down to the one in SLC to apply for a driving job and They were having a new manager training class that day or something. I always dress nice when applying, so I walk in and IMMEDIATELY get yelled at for being late and told to "get my ### in there" I look passed the irate older Lady and see several people in a room behind her. Confused, I tell her that I'm pretty sure she has me confused with someone else. She glares and asks if I'm here for the Management trainer class(I think that's what it was called) and I say no, that I was answering their ad for a driver. She huffs and says ,"we aren't hiring" and then walks away. That was 4 years ago and I haven't been back since. The SLC barn is always hiring and every place I've worked had ex Saia guys applying.
Seems like a difficult barn to be at.
Edit-forgot to specify that I was applying for a driving jobLast edited: Dec 30, 2017

Mentality sounds the same as what I've encountered. You had a manglement position waiting and you didn't take it. I probably could not have resisted the temptation. I'd have turned myself into a regional VP and fired a bunch of them for petty stuff. :^)

My observations and analyseses are valid.
Another iron-clad observation i use is, if the company/industry has people shooting up the place, then it's likely that the place is, at least, a somewhat stressful work environment:
How many times has a UPS package facility been shot up vs. grocery drop and hook place?
2) Sorry, but in each situation i've observed, if a driver had a corvette, then the job paid at least 50K gross (and this was back in 2000) and up to now-----75K. This is irrefutable
a) Ya ain't going to buy a nice Toyota Tundra crew cab working at Central (no offense to central).LoneCowboy Thanks this. -
P.S.
i got my eye on a 4 door Colorado. Couldn't do that if i was working at some ghetto place--- -
I think There's something to the theory. I've noticed there are a lot of Challenger and Mustang mid-life crisis cars in the employee lot. Some Camaros, Cadillacs, and a couple top of the line dually Fords that cost as much as a house. No Vettes that I've noticed though.
I ruin the curve though with my raggedy old pickup that's older than me.tony97905 and Russian Rabbit Thank this. -
Ok great! So it's conclusively settled that the way to judge LTL companies is by: 1) number of mass shootings on premiseses 2) quality and age of cars in the employee parking lot and 3) condition of facilities and equipment.
i may write up and submit a form if there's time.LoneCowboy Thanks this. -
