Best donuts you've ever eaten while trucking.

Don’t forget the Little Debbie white powdered donuts. It’s too bad they allowed the price to skyrocket.

 

I don't know why I remember this, but back a few years ago when many of the PFJ's still brought in "local donuts" in the early mornings of most days, the Pilot near Percival, IA at I-29 and Hwy 2, had THE BEST plain glazed donuts I've ever had. Far better than typical, especially if you could get them early, right after they were delivered and put out.

I made it a point one time to point it out to the person at the register and she said they hear drivers compliment them regularly.

 

i was told, the BEST way to have a krispy creme was right out of the cooker. we had a krispy creme here in my area, but you could NEVER get in, and i simply DO NOT stand in any food line, not even the buffet line...no food is worth standing in long lines for.

i did have a dozen krispy creme donuts, that i bought at the grocery store, came in a typical long donut box....they were terrible...

 

They post calorie counts here as well. I’m sure it’s as effective as the graphic warnings on tobacco products

 

Winchels was a franchised doughnut shop. They made everything in the store. Used to cook them several times a day. Still around, just not the number of them, like years ago.

Spudnuts was another. The big claim to fame was a potato flour base. They were really good. Not super sweet, just right. The had a crunch on the outside and a nice tooth on the inside. Most of the stores are gone, the main company closed. You can still get them all over the country. A former employee bought the recipes for the base flour and sells it to licensed shops.

 

Warm and fresh is the best way to eat any doughnut regardless of where it's from. My friends used to call me doughnut Jesus, because I could warm up a 3 day old doughnut in the oven just right and bring it back from the dead.

Back in the good ol days, we had a chain in Texas called Shipley's. They were light fluffy yeast donuts. Fresh one's melted in your mouth. There are a few left here and there, but not many.

but this joint is a diabetes proving ground, both locations on a major road w parking but busy during normal hours, open till 9 on weekdays and 1am on weekends.
