I'm trying to find out what is required, permit wise, to haul liquor. I'm leased to a small company and I'm having a hard time getting information on this subject from anyone. I know certain states require transport permits, how do I go about getting those and is anything else required from the DOT or insurance? Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

What states are you planning your route through?

Any time I need to know a regulation for a certain state or if a permit is required I call the states DOT office or a local DOT headquarters if I can find one.

No specific routes yet, I have access to a couple liquor warehouses with loads going all over. Finding out which states require permits is pretty easy, I'm just trying to figure out if that's all I need.

List of states that require permits:

    California
    Indiana
    Kansas
    Kentucky
    Massachusetts
    New Mexico
    New York
    Ohio
    Oklahoma
    Pennsylvania
    Virginia
    West Virginia
    North Carolina

My dad used to transport Miller beer from Fort Worth, TX regularly and I asked him what he did to find out if a permit was required in a certain state. He recommended calling the states ABC, or Alcoholic Beverage Commission for information.

    Hope it helps.

Add Maryland to that, I used to take Alcohol via containers off ship from Scotland and North West Europe to Seagrams downtown. We always had a little card to go with the likker in that thing. Same with more boxes of finished VO or something going out to the sea.

Most all states have what is called or similar to the title "Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division" of government. They are very pleased to take questions from anyone that needs clarification rather than to do enforcement against those that did not ask anything.

I think New Jersey requires one too but not sure because I don't have permits here, for some reason jersey sticks into my mind.

Only time jersey wanted me to have a permit was when I was getting hard liquor but never asked when I was at the bud plant.

Ya'll talking about hauling it in a tanker or running it like Smokey and the Bandit?

Whenever this question comes up, California is always on the list. I live in California and haul alcohol most of the time. There is no special permit required here. I had a guy say that there was and he would send me a copy of it, but he never did. Nobody at the state ABC has heard of it or the DOT. I haul only in the western US, and Texas and New Mexico are the only states that require a special permit out here that I'm aware of.
