I have spent over 20 yrs treading water in the restaurant industry, and want to do something better for myself. I am very interested in the trucking industry. I have a couple of friends that are drivers, but one is a trainer, so he is a real salesman for his company, and the other trained under him, then went to a different company, so I don't know how to take what they say about their school. Everything I have read on this forum is about people either bashing companies or belittling schools. It's really sounding like every school and company out there are just trying to screw newbies over any chance they get. Does anyone have any advice on a good school to go through, that will help you get a job after? How about any good companies that have their own schools that you can work for afterwards. I am really really really poor so up front cost is a big factor. It would be nice if they were in the east Texas area, I live in Austin, but not absolutely necessary. Thanks.
Griping is a luxury. If you don't have it, don't worry about it. There are a few companies that have schools. Werner, Schneider, CR England come to mind. Schneider is probably the best bet if you can swing it. CR is to be avoided. You're already used to treading water, so that's a start.
I would try to avoid going to a school through a company. It cost a lot more inthe long run. You also have to sign a contract saying you will work for them untill you pay them back. They will take a 100 to 150 out of your paycheck untill its paid.And as a new driver thats alot. Any school you go to will help you get a job. But if you have to go to school through a company schneider would be a good choice. I would call them up and get some facts about their school.
you should contact several companies and see what they have to offer, then i would contact area truck driving schools and see what they have to offer, then compare your notes, see what would benifit you more in the long wrong. i do agree that you should stay away from company training, you then become property of that company.
