If a company truck has an APU, does that automatically mean it has 110 volts AC? Does it have normal AC power outlets for plugging in things like a computer or tv? In other words, does an APU have a built in inverter? Is the APU only a generator for aux power, and you would also have an additional heat/ac unit? Or does it somehow operate the truck's normal heater/air conditioner? In the cab and sleeper, what additional outlets does a truck with an APU have? In operation, do you only turn on the APU when your truck engine is off? Is the sound level of an APU somewhat like that of a reefer unit?
!. No Not all APU's provide 110VAC. Most have a 12v-110v inverter installed, but not all. The APU generator is hooked to the truck 12v system to keep the batteries charged. 2. The APU provide Aux A/C to the bunk area only. It is independent of the truck ac. Some are tied into the truck engine cooling system, as such they act as a block heater when running. Most APU equipped truck use an Espar type desiel fired heater for the sleeper. 3. Most are setup to run only when the truck engine is off. Some can be set to automaticaally come on when the truck engine is turned off. 4 Most APU's are less noisy than reefers. But as they age , they do seem to get louder. The minor vibration is good to get you to sleep.
