I wouldn't call ANY type of APU an outright ripoff myself. The true ROI is varied, but eventually it will pay for itself.
For those of us that have the means, tools, and skills to fabricate, it can be done for a LOT cheaper than the average APU cost of $10k
Diesel is also an option, as I found out last week when talking to 2 Sammons drivers. they had a diesel engine in their headache racks, that solely provided 110v for heat/AC/battery charging, etc. 10kw IIRC, but cost a lot more than the Honda unit obviously.
If I was to knock them out myself, probably about $4k out the door if I had a FEW interested. That would get a discount on the generators and rooftop AC units.

yeap, as we said before , no matter which route one goes, it will save money. I saw one mercer guy who mounted his generator behind the landing legs of his trailer and ran a 110 volt outlet and a twist lock 30 amp outlet to the front of his trailer, and had another cord that ran from the twist lock 30 amp to his rooftop a/c. he owned the trailer and never swapped out.

At today's estimated fuel prices $3.95 per gal average you will be spending approximate $9.875 per 10hrs of APU run time compared to $39.50 per 10hrs of main motor run time.

OOIDA no longer finances dynasys. Are Tripacs worth anything?

Even so, dealer location is a big difference. 35 to thermo king and 117 to dynasys.
