I asked this elsewhere thought I'd drop it here too. How do you do a leak down test in an automated trans. I mean you can't put it gear with the engine off and pump the pedal till the knobs pop out right?
You don't do a leak down test in gear, at least that's not how I was taught. Everything else temains the same.
Don't you put it in gear. Turn off engine. Push in red and yellow knobs. Pump brakes till knobs pop out.
I suddenly realized that autos probably don't roll with the engine off. And the safe way to do a static test is to chock a wheel. Because if you always use the trans to hold you will forget to take it out of gear at some point. But I used the trans even on my NYS road test
People sometime forget that at the basic transmission level there is no real difference between a 10 speed manual and a 10 speed (automatic). The only real difference is the shifter on top and some other things that allow it to work. The biggest problem with these auto shifts can start when you shut the switch off and it is in gear. In some situations you can do this and the safety interlocks won't let you crank the engine. I have seen some trucks have to have mechanics come out to crank them.
Tragedy needs 3 things to happen. (has happened and yes it can be deadly) 1 Truck left in gear. 2 defect in the fuel pump system. 3 hot carbon in one of the cylinders under pressure already. In the past it was not unheard of for a parked truck to jump 2 or 3 feet. NEVER park a truck with a diesel engine in gear.
