Here is biggest and safest thing to do. 1) if in truck leave window up and smile at em and wave 2) if out of truck just use a suggestion above, ie no cash, broke, etc and this is the most important.......... 3) never....never....ever.....be rude or yell at someone who comes a knocking why....... you may end up in the morning with all your tires flatten because you peeved the person off. (happened to another driver at a truckstop who yelled at someone they didn't know and was a pretty expensive learning curve, how would you explain to your company you need 18 new tires?)
A lot of these beggers do this as a part time job for drugs.I don't feel sorry for any of them unless they're old and just want food, then i'll be more then happy to feed them.
In Nashville a local news company sent undercover reporters around and when beggars asked for money, they would offer them a free meal and a job. None of the beggars took the offer. One asked how much the job pays and was told something like $10.00 and hour; he laughed and said he makes over $100.00 an hour begging plus free meals and lodging at the local mission. I don't give them anything!
I wouldn't admit that a beggar gave you his hygiene products because he thought you needed it more than him, if I were you.
I carry a few $1,000,000 bills in my wallet that I printed out for the truly needy. Nothing will put a smile on a person's face faster than becoming independently wealthy just by asking.
I like to get a handful of job application from McDonald's. They don't like that when you hand them one
