I like my Ranger, but spendy. Uniden pc78 Is a good one not sure if they make it anymore?. Had the Uniden for almost 25 years Strykers make a good radio
Pretty happy with my President Mckinley. Straight out of the box with the stock mic. And a 5,' Firestik. Sat in garage for 3 yrs before I recently installed it. I think it was around $150.
You can talk to 10 different drivers and 10 different techs and get 37 different answers.. Best bet is to look at different radios and see what you like the looks of and narrow down the list based on google searchs for options, cost and then reviews.. I love my strykers but the next loves his galaxys and someone else gets all he needs n wants out of a pawn shop uniden or cobra..
Ah, the best cb radio question. Well for starters, I would suggest you stay away from the import radios like Stryker. If you would like to know why, just look at the thread called "I hear hard drive". Another reason to stay away from import radios is that they are made for 10/12 meters, and cb is in the 11 meter band. What this means is that you will have to pay a tech to convert the already high priced radio to use on 11 meters, which usually isn't too hard to do. But you will have to pay the tech to do an alignment on the radio for 11 meters. So if you have deep pockets, then maybe that's the way to go. But since you are using a real cb radio like the Cobra 29, then I would suggest you stay away from the new Cobra radios, because they have cold solder joint issues (like Galaxy) due to poor quality control from the factory. If you really like the Cobra 29, then I would suggest you get the President PC78LTX, it looks like the 29, but it has the high/cut switch that a lot of guys like. PC78LTX - Uniden CB Radio Two other great President radios I would recommend are the Walker II FCC and the Taylor. They both have the high/cut feature as well as weather and a USB port. The Walker II FCC also has an RF power knob which is great if you want to run a small amp like the RM Italy KL203P. No need to pay a tech extra $$ to install variable RF power. WALKER II - President 40 Channel CB Radio with ASC, Scan, Roger, Weather and More Now these are AM radios like the Cobra 29 that you now have, but if you are interested in SSB, then the President Mckinley would probably be the best way to go. I've heard good reports on this radio. MCKINLEY - President Deluxe AM/SSB CB Radio I would stay away from the Uniden BC980SSB. It seems like after about a year, guys are having problems with the display going dim. Maybe this has been fixed with the newer 980's? Hope this helps.
"....you will have to pay a tech to convert the already high priced radio to use on 11 meters..." It's just a couple buttons to push on the Anytone AT-6666. A child could do it
all radios have a lifespan of xx number of years. constant shaking, vibration, dust, out of tune antennas, are among a few things that shorten the life. then there are the internal parts, that can only take so much heat for the hours of operation. the best cb radio, is one that is new, out of the box, untouched by any tech to peak it. oh yeah, and on sale too........
