I need some help here. I was a hot shot hauling cars for 1 year so I have my class a cdl but it's not good for air brakes because the truck I drove didn't have air brakes. I am now wanting to start driving a semi. I was going to goto school and drive with Pam. But from what I have been reading on here it is not good to have to sign a contract with a company. So my question is what would be my options to get my air brakes on my cdl and a good starter company to start with without having to sign some kind of contract.
I think you should be able to go get a Michigan CDL book and study the air brake portion. Go to your DMV and take the air brake test on the computer. I think you should be able to simply add it as an endorsement like adding hazmat.
what jmorgn said is correct. plus you have to go and test with an instuctor also in the field with an air brakes vehicle.
Toast...you can study for air break test in michigan and take it your self....then the hunt for a job is your next task will be finding some one to take u with no exp...good luck...
Personally I think signing a contract with a company is far better than forking over $6000 for school or taking out a bank loan! Worse yet, a government loan! At least with company schooling they aren't going to put a lien on your house or come after you damaging your credit! Plus provided you pass the tests and get your license you are guaranteed a job! That's kind of a "no brainer"! So what if you have to work for a company for year.... That's what you are in for in the first place. All companies have their good and bad points. Its up to the individual to decide it that particular company is going to best suit them and their needs. It is better to go with a smaller carrier though. If possible try to avoid the mega-carriers or top 5 super companies! Good luck man...
