Does anybody know of good o/o local work in the Seattle area with containers? Im looking into driving again after i retire from the army ,and most likely Ill be in the Seattle area,
Do not know about Seattle, but should you decide to live on the east coast Jacksonville. FL is booming in the contaainer biz. 5 Different off-load facilities. It has gotten so big they have one area that the highways around it are being completely restructured for all of the container traffic. SPoke to one driver that runs FL only that said he has been getting 2800+ mi/wk. Seattle is beautiful but I couldn't handle all the rainy days.LOL GL Thank you for serving for our country!
Container work in my experiance stinks.... You run your tail off for peanuts.. The equipment is terrible, bad tires, missing, broken lights... bad brakes, overweight loads, long lines at port waiting, rushing around trying to turn in chassis, find boxes, interchanges, booking numbers that don't match.. It's pretty much the bottom of the barrel in trucking.. Logs... not a heck of a lot better... You are always overweight.. Your getting stuck, muddy, dirty, always getting flats,... sound like fun?? What is you MOS.. isn't there anything related to that you can do? Work on base as a civilian employee driving trucks... Getting paid vacations, hollidays, retirement, and benifits... Those container outfits don't offer anything that comes close to a gov't position..
It's not all that bad, especially the money when you're running about 500 miles a day, making over 900.00 dollars a day, and bringing home close to 2,000 a week is worth the hassle at the ports. That is if you're running Govt containers to the ports, like Norfolk VA, you don't need to drop the chassis. Instead when you find a good one, you tell them at the guard shack that you want to keep the same chassis. It's not all that bad as you make it sound. Once in a while you'll find something wrong with the container, in which you take it through the bay area for them to fix it. The container work that pays cheaper, are to and from the Rail yards. But hauling the Govt containers from the Military Depots to the Ports, pays much better. There are many other jobs much harder than dropping and picking up containers. Check the craigslist in your area and you should find much info there for containers.
