    I saw a few running backwards,blowing exhaust out the air intake.

    Yes and I only saw one run backwards once and it was a 8-71 in a Freightliner in the late 70s.
    What a mess, he had twin oil bath air cleaners with scoops extended above the cab as well as twin 5 inch stacks outboard. The cab was white over British racing Green and that thing tossed 6 quarts of dirty oil out over the roof in 15 or 20 seconds while the driver tried to figure out why the transmission was doing stupid things while he was trying to get out our the ditch during an ice storm.
    (The description is for those who might recognize a common sight pulling a cow bus in the 70s and 80s.)
