Desktop

I'm spending alot of money getting the things I need to make this KW 900 liveable I may have to delay purchaing a laptop for a month or 2. I'm considering taking my desktop with me. Is anyone else using a desktop? The monitor is a Lcd I can strap it to the laptop stand and put my tower in front of the passenger seat. I'll be using a Sprint Broadband card. It will use a usb connection on the back of the tower which will position it close to the door, maybe it will get decent reception that way. Any suggestion on setting this up and making it work will be appreciated.

 

Just remember that laptops are made to travel and a truck is not like sitting in your living room. It moves and bumps. this is hard on the boards inside of the computer...Years ago I had a home computer in my truck..Be fore the PC.
anyway I had problems with the memory coming loose. Very soon the road fried the unit... I was driving a CL9000. With the air ride cab. I would not take my desktop in the truck with me.. The monitor is a story unto it's self.
I have a friend that has the LCD monitor mounted in his sleeper, and has had no problems.

 

Agreed. Desktop machines aren't designed to be "on the road". You're asking for issues if you do so. If you're really comfortable with the internal goodies of the CPU, you can always do a check inside the case before you fire it up each time, but that'll get really old in a hurry. Best to wait until you can snag a notebook.

 

Thanks Phil and Biker I kinda figured I would be risking destroying my tower and ya'll just confirmed it. Back to the laptop HUNT!!!!!

 

YES find a cheep laptop and you will have a start...After while you can get a better unit..

 

Try Office Depot if you have one near you. We have one here and they have some sales going on.

 

The power requirements for a desktop are also a lot higher. The average power supply for a laptop is around 100 watts and you can get a 12V adapter for it. An LCD monitor will pull 40 watts or more all by itself, a small power supply in a desktop is 300 watts. Not to mention the hassle of what to do with the keyboard and mouse.

 

Power won't be an issue for me the truck already has a fairly new Rigmaster APU. Yesterday I bought a 1500watt/ 3000 surge power inverter, 700 watt microwave, and a built in refrigerator( that I will install behind the drivers seat) plus a kooltron just for drinks to keep within reach of the drivers seat.

I was hopeing that the vibration wouldn't mess up my computer tower. But now I won't even consider that option anymore.

I do need to check out the local Office Max and Depot.


I like paying cash for things and not charging stuff but I may have no choice.

I'm sure my wife would like me to pay the house note too before I leave!

While I'm not a huge fan of Acer. But they have gotten better.

Check out the Acer thats availible at Wal-Mart for about $500. If you're willing to pop a few more bucks out, HP has a really nice one for about $875 at Sam's Club with all the bells and whistles.

The Acer will do everything you need, and then some. It beats the crap out of the $400 jobs you see and hear about at truck stops. More memory (by about 6 times), more HD space, and the most current OS with recovery disc.
