A lot of it is hype. Like everywhere, depends on where you're going. There are plenty of other places I am less comfortable in than Motown.

Hood Rat Central... LOL... Call ahead and see if the receiver will let you park over night.... Coming up 75 from Toledo there are a couple of truck stops... There's a scale at the state line you could park at also...

Most places let you park @ their place in Detroit or at least stage.

    Industrial town.

But.... I can attest to getting better treatment with long hair as to when I had it buzzed and looked like "the man".

Do you look like the man ; man.

Nothing to be afraid of. Most people there leave truckers alone. Just pay attention to road signage and make sure you don't end up in Canada!

    Where are you delivering to?

Some places WILL not let you sit on their lot for any reason and there isn't a place to park so it matters. DO NOT park on the street in some parts of the city (like St Aubin or Russel near 94) and try to stage yourself to get in and out to a truck stop (there are a couple like on 94 and Ecorse)

Most of the time you don't have anything to worry about but there is always a chance of a problem. The city is barren waste land but gang activity is still a problem and so is random stuff.

I've always timed getting in and out of Detroit so I've never had to consider shutting down for a 10 anywhere close to the city. My main concern with deliveries or pick ups in Detroit is to pay attention to bridge clearances. At times on the interstate through the city it seems like you are going under a low clearance tunnel, with bridges every 100' and every one of them is 13' 7" and plenty of damage from previous bridge strikes.
