I hope to be starting soon on my first Long Haul job. about 2200 miles each way. Out for 14 days. (maybe 2) Will be with another driver to teach me the ropes. Really excited but also apprehensive about living with a stranger for 2 weeks. It will be a big sleeper but still I imagine space will be at a premium. I figure that I will do laundry on my reset. I wear nothing but shorts or jeans and T shirts. None of those ever go in a dryer. I doubt there is room to hang 7 shorts and t shirts. I suppose I could use the air fluff on the dryer and just use a few more dryer cycles. Any thoughts on that? What are the laundries like in the "J/Pilot"? Company does not allow smoking in the cab and I am glad! I hate being close to a smoker. I sure hope the other driver is easy going. Bruce
well i don't have to worry about it but pilots/j's are going to be expensive to wash/dry and WHY use extra money to air fluff over and over when you use one (1) drying cycle and be done? regarding no smoking,i agree 1000%.what if your driving partner is a woman and she smokes? when younger we had a saying regarding gals that smoke and if you are going to be cooped up that long, one or the other of you might just get lucky- just saying there bruce. you just felt like posting something didn't you? i did too. I've never teamed ,never will, and even spending a week at a time otr and infrequently w/my girlfriend produces a claustrophobic and uneuphoric feeling. close confines will test even the best- regardless, here's hoping that your long hauling career is a splendid one.I do not miss being out that long but then i am an old man by some standards.
Plan on using the drier. If I had a codriver who expected to hang laundry in the truck, he or she would probably end up "hanging." Truckstop washers run about $2.00 to $2.50 a load, and aren't always in the best condition. Have you given any thought to what you might wear this winter? Shorts and a tee aren't very conducive to avoiding frost bite in colder climes.
They run mostly, approximately $2.00 at the Pilot/Flying J's, maybe more by now. Not all Pilot's have laundry so check the Pilot/FJ magazine locations listing. Dryers tend to be the same money wise, but often... you need to feed additional coins to really get them dry especially jeans. Check the washers and dryers before you use them to see what they look like, what's in them, that they are working, etc... before you use them. Good Luck
Thanks: ironpony: I am only working the warm months. Too old to suffer in the winter! My partner will definitely not be a gal. I would bet that would be illegal in some jurisdictions! I need to be sharp on my first real trucking experience and fooling around is hard on the brain. Please no double entendre's! I am having some wild imaginary thoughts. Of course if it was a woman she would look like my 80 year old Grandma. Aside from all this joking I just don't do that type of thing! Been happily married too long! Bruce
illegal in some jurisdictions? to what? to drive team w/the opposite sex? I wouldn't consider running team if my team partner was not female.I am biased like that but then i am unable to envision ever running team so it all is a moot point. just don't wear flip flops w/those shorts and tshirts as you get DOT'd.Had one officer tell me that she appreciated that i was wearing closed end shoes as i drive.asked her why and she said it was the law and it would be a written infraction had i exited the cab wearing them.Imagine that. I assumed that she had just written up a flipflop wearing trucker.shorts and tshirts are apparently fine to wear and i wear them.i reserve my flipflop wearing for the t/s showers. just an fyi mr.future longhauler.best of luck-
As per the flip flop sub, you can wear crocs or something similar if you want to air out your feet and not make the whole sleeper stink with foot odor. LOL jmo
Bruce, it's ok that you don't "like being close to a smoker". Is it ok that they don't like being close to you?
7mph: I doubt many non smokers would want to be in the confines of a truck cab with a smoker. If that offends you then just quit smoking!! I assume that post was from your alter ego! who you state is a jerk. Bruce
