Hi all, just thought I would share my little experiment, I have a Cummins M11 and I have always had a problem with soot from the stacks falling onto the truck which makes the truck dirty and of cause then I have to clean the truck just because of the soot. So I decided to try wrapping the exhaust with exhaust wrap, what I did was I loosley wraped the turbo but left the sides of the turbo unwrapped so it does not heat up too much, I also wraped the 1st 4 feet of exhaust pipe where it bolts onto the turbo outwards towards to mufflers. to my surprise it actually worked very well, I no longer get soot falling all over the truck, and pyro temps are good.
Pittsburgh Power sells a turbo blanket that covers the turbo. I have the PP blanket and have my exhaust wrapped a couple feet from the turbo. My stacks are in the rear behind the sleeper. Is it possible you have rain entering your stacks, and when you start your engine you are blowing the stack water out?
that was happing, so I put rain caps on, but still after several months had the problem. but the exhaust wrap has totally stoped it now. just thought I would share this info for others.
I have this problem as well. Everytime I start the truck, little soot flakes flow out of the 7" pipes and fall all over the truck. If it's wet out, they turn into black dots and look like crap. I also got some on the inside of my car with tan interior (started truck next to car with the door open) and let me tell you, even with leather, it was a PITA to get clean. I will have to try this trick once the new turbo gets here :yup:
I just bought 100' of DEI's Titanium wrap and a bunch of ties. I'm going to wrap from the flex pipe off the turbo all the way back to the bottom of the stacks. Not doing it for the soot, but that will be a bonus. Never really gave a thought to the EGT's as I don't have a pyro anyways. Hopefully will no raise them too much.
