pulling a skateboard will assist in keeping in shape. Makes you get out of the truck and do something physical and you arent always bumping a dock.
When stuck at a shipper walk, take a skateboard or bicycle and explore the surrounding area. Kill 3 birds simultaneously: exercise, grab a bite to eat somewhere and sight see.
I keep a air stepper in my cab. I'm always stuck somewhere, plenty of time get 20 - 30 mins of cardio. It also trips out people in shipping offices, they wonder why the cab is bouncing up and down
I like to park as far away from the door as I can so that I actually have to walk to the door I also like to walk around the parking lot if its a big parking lot
I watched a guy at a Pilot in Altoona Iowa use a milk crate, a 2 feet sheet of plywood, and free weights and set up his own weight bench in the parking lot. Was kinda cool to see that. I think his weights were around 50lbs each.
I'd take a guess and say maybe 10 out of the 100 or so drivers at any given stop exercise. After dealing with a 10-12 hour day full of "work" hardly anyone feels like jogging or doing push-ups. Im one of those, although i try to eat as healthy as possible to make up for it. I figure I'll still have plenty of time for damage control when I come off the road. Join a gym and have and actual kitchen to cook in, sounds like a plan to me.
I have carried a bicycle with me for the past 10 years. If you are going to stow it outside behind the cab put it in a bag made for the purpose, otherwise it will be destroyed in short order. Every driver out here could make time to exercise. It might mean telling operations that schedule is too tight or might eat into your TV time. It is simply a matter of priorities. Now with 10 hours off at once little reason not to at least go for a 30 minute power walk, weather permitting. Truckers are no different than the general public in this regard, full of excuses.
give it time and companies will probably start putting in rules prohibiting bikes and too much stuff in the truck, because it all adds weight I had to "rescue" a guy at a scale once who had a bike hung on his truck, but he had to slide the 5th wheel and the reefer crushed the bike
True. Huge difference being there are much greater consequences when truckers make excuses to exercise than the general public. At least they have a healthier dose of walking mixed into their daily routine than us. And those of you saying "i park far away" if all you are doing is relying on THAT you are fooling yourself and doing NOTHING for your overall health and wellness.
