Tank yanking is usually decent money with some time under your belt, and often home daily, as well. Either would be an upward move for the O/P.
Plenty of open deck carriers out there that look for experienced only. But the experience has to be in open deck, and even then you better research research research!
You don't need to know the company names you need to know the formula. Training company = hires newbies, self insured, high turnover = crappy piece work pay, low respect. Small OTR = needs experience, needs to meet insurance requirements = better piece work pay maybe? , more respect sometimes?. Carrier leases to direct to company = needs experience, needs to meet insurance requirements = better pay, maybe hourly, more respect. Carrier transports own product = needs experience, needs to meet Insurance requirements = better yet pay, more likely hourly, much more respect. LTL = has no problem finding experience = Better yet pay, mostly hourly, much more respect.
Speaking of small OTR, I could walk up the three story set of stairs into the offices of Frock Bros which is not far from roughly Gettysburg-Hanover as the crow flies with 30 years of gilt plated experience and they STILL wont hire me LOL. I bet you... They run largecars with premium reefer equiptment. It's not everyone that can get into small OTR.
You guys who think that experience equals money should understand clean records with experience equals real money, clean records not just driving truck either.
After a couple of years you could haul fuel. Private is the way to go-carriers that haul their own product(s). Think grocery hauling. There are plenty of diamonds in the rough in every area though. My company only has 25 trucks. All local, union, paid benefits, home everyday with weekends off. We all average 85-110k a year. I believe one of our drivers made a little more last year.
Similar to my gig, with a few less trucks, W2's, and hauling asphalt. I found my diamond..... they are out here for the hunting!
