I thought I would start a thread devoted to the Freight division since there have been a lot of questions about it here lately. If you have any questions ask away and I'll try to answer them or find the answer. Little about me - been here for over 6 years at a couple of terminals and have spent time in every part of the operation. Extra board, couple years in the city (P&D),and night line-haul which I currently do. This is my second year now running night line-haul with a bid. I'm not speaking for the company but can give you a general idea of what goes on here.
Good idea on the thread Jake. Any overall updates about how things are going? Sounds like freight is still really rocking.............
More less about the same as it has been since last June. Could get interesting with vacations and the busy season starting soon though - not enough drivers or trucks.
At our Monday meeting we were told the system was 495 drivers short on Fri. night. I started less than a month ago and have 8 under me. I'm 5th on city flex and 2nd on L/H flex. Very busy indeed.

I did not know Chicagoland was now using 70.. I cannot believe the East Coast has not went to them yet due to the massive amount of freight and lack of manpower. This is the first time I've ever heard of city drivers watching their hours and filling out logs daily. Good problems to have though..
Im looking for any and all information on working with Conway freight, I recently filled out an application and just received a call from someone in personnel to schedule an interview and road test. Im currently with Werner on a dedicated account and guessing Conway is a much better company to work for as far as benefits, pay and home time goes, along with treating the drivers better? Any and all info would be appreciated, i would be working out of the Indy terminal. Thx
There are some newer drivers here that could tell you more about starting pay, work schedule, and their experience here starting out since a lot has changed here since I was new, but I can at least give you some general info. All drivers are home daily, OT is at 8/40, paid mileage for the driving part of line-haul and hourly to the minute for everything else like drop/hook, fuel, dock, breakdown, etc, decent insurance, 401K that is still kinda matched, and pretty good facilities for the most part. When you start out, you're on call but from what I've seen lately most new drivers do about the same thing all week since we're so busy. Once 15% of the board is under you, you'll get a bid which is either line-haul or a set start time based off what you bid and what you're seniority allows you to hold. With as many drivers as we need, you would move up a lot faster than I did starting over 6 years ago. It has it's ups and downs but overall it's a great place to drive a truck. The 5 years to top rate is too long, but once you get there it's nice. You can make a lot of money here while being home everyday to enjoy it. Lot of work here also so you'll be working - not sitting by the phone. Anything specific just ask and I'll tell you what I know..
what do you mean by bidding for jobs? Don't they just assign you loads through a fleet manager like other companies or can you pick what you want? I guess there is no foced dispatch? The personnel director said they are extremely busy and starting pay was .42 mile and $18.xx hr.. do drivers work the dock when they are not driving, not sure how the setup works compared to what I'm currently doing but it sounds like i'd be paid for all my work time instead of the cheap labor im currently performing for Werner.
