Go pro?

Just wanting to get opinions on having a go pro in truck. I currently don't have one but thinking about getting one.Are they worth the $$$ and pretty easy to use?

 

For what purpose? As a 24/7 drive cam for critical events? Probably not. Should use a dedicated drive-cam for that. But for taking vid recordings and interval stills of beautiful drives, the GoPro is hard to beat and is more versatile for outside the truck scenarios, as well. It (GoPro) will provide much more accurate color reproduction and image quality then most drive-cams can ever dream of and can do so up to 4K if you can take full advantage of that and can afford the higher end models.

Also, most drive-cams will outperform a GoPro in dark or very low light conditions .... meaning you're probably looking for a true drive-cam and not a high-quality video production camera at that point.

 

Yea for a 24/7 drive cam pretty much just to keep me safe if someone does something stupid

 

I was thinking about buying a go pro Walmart has them for $180 dollars just haven't heard anything about a go pro

 

They're a great camera for all sorts of video and interval still shooting and creative angle shots, but the dedicated drive-cams are cheaper and easier to use if you just want to protect yourself and to occasionally grab an image or video clip for later reference and enjoyment. But I've found color reproduction of most popular drive-cams to be less then accurate if you're really into accurate video for screen viewing enjoyment. They tend to over-saturate colors, which is not really an issue when used for their intended purpose as a drive-cam/event recorder

A GoPro wouldn't be feasible for use as a dash cam. It records to a memory card that would have to be swapped out every few hours. Or erased. There's probably a way you could hook it up to a pc and record for longer periods. A dedicated dash cam would just be way easier to deal with. Just my 2 cents.

 

The GoPro isn't designed for 24/7 usage. The battery doesn't last long enough, for one and it doesn't have the g-sensor and such. I bought one, thinking that it would work for that and it really isn't suited for it.
I ended up getting a Cobra dashcam. They (most dashcams) are cheaper and better designed for what you want. If you are set to spend that amount, get a good quality dashcam designed for that purpose. For a good comparison website, go to https://dashcamtalk.com/.

 

This is what i've been using the past two years Garmin Dash Cam 20. Works great stays on 24/7 if you go with garmin stay away from the dash cam 35.

 

Not to mention a thief will walk right past a truck running a regular dash cam... if he/she sees a GoPro sitting on the dash you might come back to your truck with a smashed window
