grain hauling

i own my own truck and trailer,and have a neighbor that wants me to truck a few loads for him. Its 200 miles round trip to the elevator. Anybody have an idea on what to charge? i dont want to ask the local haulers cuz i dont want them to think im trying to steal their farmers. they are all tied up n hes needing them gone now.

 

I work in the ag industry. I get 25% of each load as a company driver. On a 200 mile load I'd collect about $225 so that means my boss is charging $900 to haul that load. He's contracted to haul a minimum if 50,000lbs net weight. Anything under 50K net get billed as 50K. Anything over 50K is a few extra bucks. Hope that helps

That's a real good rate. We don't get that hauling grain in MN and were "expensive" compared to a lot of guys.

 

Haul it by the bushel with a minimum load charge. Like said above, have a specific weight. If its less than "x" bushels, you charge the minimum load charge (900). If its over "x" bushels it's a bonus.

 

yeah here in ky. they arent getting that much either. before i bought my truck i was paying .38 cents bu. i was just wondering what was goin rate now. i think its about .50. i have a framless dump. and dont have a haul back. right now its cheaper for me to get feed from tenn. trucked in than for me to pick it up at the local elevtor.

 

When we have a flat tire & we need some shop to fix it and they have to come to us to do that we have to pay for more than the cost to fix the tire we have to pay for what is known as a service call so when you have a load or two or ten and the trucking company has to give you a price for that, they have to charge a minimum $500 service Call Plus $1.75 to $2/mile for the load to be worth it. There are a lot of factors involved in hauling a load.Unfortunately for us most of these wana be a broker quote rates based on fuel costs or on if this load takes you home or not,So if you had a flat tire or a busted air bag or a breakdown of any kind you are suppose to pay for it How?...You can't make chicken soup with dry bones you gota have a little meat left on it

 

I haul grain in KY on a 200 mile round trip, if you can get 900 bushel on then charge about 35-36 cents on the bushel. Anything over that the price goes up. If you can't get on more than 900 bushel don't even try. Don't do axle weights they'll screw you. Get a good platform weight and a suspension load gauge and make a mark on it for where you'll be when your loaded. I have two marks on mine one for the front and back hopper and if I load to those gauges I weigh at about 79,500.. If you can tell me the elevator I can help with directions and unload procedures.

thanks that helps. i jjust haul for myself. i go to owensboro grain, gavilon(debruce). and caneyville mill once or twice. my trailer holds a 950 beans and 1000 corn. its spring suspension so no load gauges. i think ive pulled on the scales once at less than 80000. would like to get different trailer but dont know how much weight i can shave.
