Grease question...

If a truck owner was meticulous about greasing his truck every week, does it matter what brand or "quality" grease he/she used?

I'm just wondering if the added expense of buying a quality name-brand grease (Lucas?) would pay off in the long run?

Or, is grease just grease?

 

Grease is not grease (oils ain't oils - LOL) I use Caltex molygrease (chevron molygrease in the USA) it is only about $1 more than regular EP grease Molygrease is one type of grease that is reccommended to be used on 5th wheels. It works great because once the oil in grease is gone there is still moly left behind to lubricate.

 

But wouldn't any grease with Moly do the same thing? Why pay more for the name brand?

 

yep it would just make sure it has either 3% or more of moly in it, I just said chevron cause i now the USA has chevron molygrease. dont live in USA so have no idea what other brands are available over there.

Any grease is better than no grease. Like you, i am fanatical about greasing etc. For my own use, i want the best grease i can get. Maybe im getting nothing extra out of the expensive stuff, but it makes me feel good that im trying with the best?

 

I went to the lucas hd on my heavy equipment it seems to last a long time. we used retenex hd for years and they changed the formula and it ####'s now. i greased a loader in the morning and every three hours i had to grease it again, so i went to a parts store down the road from the job and they had lucas so i tried it and been using it sence. i'm sure there is better grease's but with some of the new epa regs from ive been told some of the manufacture's had to change there formulas. but i do give lucas thumbs up!!

 

What about Walmart (Super Tech) grease? I was looking at 'em the other day. They make several different "quality" greases.

My point is, why spend insane $ on expensive grease when it's only going to be replaced in a week.

I haven't priced the expensive grease brands, but I'd assume the Walmart stuff is 1/2 the price per tube...

I use the RED-I, it's really tacky and difficult to use in the winter, but still use it. But when I can't get it, I use Chevron Ultra Duty EP.

 

I have used a "semi-synthetic" grease for about 15 years and I have never replaced a u joint. (Mystic brand). As I am thinking about this all I can remember ever replacing, grease related, is the pitman link and tie rod ends on my current truck. I have been on road reconstruction for five years and have never been so rough on any vehicle I have ever driven, so I'm not even sure I can blame these two failures on the grease. I wish I could say I grease every week but I just don't, so I think I get excellent service for about $2.75 a tube
