Does anyone in here run a decent amount of hazmat loads? Is it common or rare for them to be available to hotshots?
Hazmat as in you need the license endorsement and plaques. Hotshot as in a 3500 truck with 40’ flatbed trailer. Not expedited as in team driving
Even building supplies can be hazmat, I did a load of glue (6 pallets) from PA to NY Had to placard and have endorsement
I have seen well paying loads on the load board for hazmat. The loads are often small and would fit on a hotshot. And not all hot shots are a 3500 with a 40 foot trailer. I digress. You must have a CDL with the hazmat endorsement and if you are running under 26,000 you most likely do not have a CDL. The big problem is the cost of your insurance will skyrocket! You might be able to purchase a single load rider on your insurance for a one time use but I am sure that the cost of it would make the load unprofitable. And the number of hazmat loads are not that often posted.
Every time I have an idea to increase profits i forget about the pesky insurance. Thanks for the info. What else qualifies as a hot shot?
Even loads that requires air ride would increase premiums. Now steady air ride freight would justify increased cost of both IMO
