I work full time at a Non-Motor Carrier 8/40. I am a casual driver for a Local Co. and usually work 6 hours a night.
    1. If my total work hours go over 12 hrs do I need to log a long form? If so, do I need to submit every night or 13th day?
    2. Do I need 12 hours off between my driving days?
    3. At the bottom of the short form, when adding previous 7 days HOS, does that reset weekly?

Just got back into driving after 30 years hiatus and need some clarification.
    Thanks in advance!

Yes you need to log showing both employers, its 10 hours off before driving after a combined 11 driving / 14 total.

You either need 10 hours off before you start your driving job, or you must complete your driving within 14 hours of starting your non-driving job. Non-driving job gets logged on line 4, and you must comply with all HOS regulations at the driving job.

Powder Joints and Pedigreed Bulldog are correct. Any person getting compensated for other work must be logged on line 4. That time also goes toward your 70/8 rule. You can work beyond your 14 hours only driving is restricted after the 14 hour. You can conduct other obligations, fueling, loading, unloading, inspections BUT NO DRIVING!! You must have a minimum of 10 hours off duty before you can drive again as long as you have hours on your 70/8 day rule. You can not do a 34 hour restart if you are beyond your 70 hours (in the negative), you must be at or under your 70 hours to do a 34 hr reset.

Never heard about that last little bit...regs only state 34 hours off to reset the work week hours to 0. If a prohibition on taking the 34 when you've exceeded the 70 exists, please cite the reg #, because I'd like to have a look at it.

It does not say anywhere in the book that you cannot take a 34 if over 70.does it ???..However you must or should take your 34 or 10 or your weekend off at or before you exceed 70

You can take a 34 hour restart any time, however if you are over the 70 hours you must wait until you are 70 hrs or less before a restart can count. This came from the FMCSA web site, and even spoke to a J.J Keller associate. You can even contact you state FMCSA rep. I usually run up to 60-65 hours before I do a reset. I like to start my reset around 6am, then 4pm the next day I can roll again with a fresh 70. I still work every day.

Post the reg from the FMCSA site that you say you got that from or it's just more truck driver ######## misinformation. I regularly run to 100 or 105 hrs on line 4 take a 34 and go again.

Drive I got this from the FMCSA compliance manual on page 505. Under the Did you know section. You can also check with the FMCSA like I have, I know you can work on line 4 and you can be on duty for 24 hours a day but you can not drive until you have 10 hours off duty of sleeper or a combo of 10 hours on line 2 or 1. Wit ha 34 hour restart, a driver can work 0ver 100 hours, the key is when do you take the 34 hour reset, and key words like driving, and on duty not driving. A driver can be on duty for as many hours as they want but can not drive until they have hours available on the 70. You can be on line 4 as long as you want to but you can not drive until compliant. How can you "run" on line 4, that is on duty not driving and yes you can stay there as long as you want to.

In the first posy I've quoted you say that a 34 doesn't count unless your under 70 hours. Nowhere in this or your previous post did you say anything about driving. In the second post you correct yourself to describing how a reset actually works. You can see how confusing this info that your spreading could be to someone new that doesn't quite understand the rules. Especially when you contradict yourself. As for me I don't drive past my 70 but I regularly work or run my book to 100 hours in one location on line 4.
