If I just paid $550 to the State of NC in August and then I just signed on with Landstar and got a Illinois IFTA sticker sent, do I get a refund of any of my money paid to the state of NC?

I think I figured it out....my 2290 receipt that I faxed to Landstar shows that I paid the IFTA Taxes to the IRS for 2007. So, they will not take $550 from me since I am already paid up AND since I have an Illinois tag, I have to have a Illinois IFTA. CORRECT?

Form 2290 is for the Heavy Vehicle Tax.

IFTA is the quarterly reporting of mileage, gallons of fuel by state that is required. This is usually paid to the state not the IRS.

To expand a bit on Roadmedic's correct response; form 2290 is the federal heavy vehicle use tax and is required to be paid before your truck can be plated. It is paid to the IRS annually and is a stand-alone tax.

IFTA is the International Fuel Tax Agreement plan which is the system used to insure that each state gets it's fair share of the fuel taxes owed to them based on the miles you run in their state regardless of what state you bought fuel in. These two tax programs are not related and you must have both to operate in interstate commerce.
