Hey, Starting in mid-October I will be starting school in Elm Mott, Tx at ATDS trucking school. I have worked for over a year at least in shipping yards around the Waco, Tx. area and quickly learned that despite some downsides, trucking is the job for a young man trying making his way. I will most likely be trucking from Central Refrigerated after my schooling, but one thing at a time right? If I've learned one thing from my trucker friends, its that this is not one thing you want to be running into too quickly. Correct me if I'm wrong, any advice would be much appreciated too if you have the time. Thank you and safe driving ya'll.
Welcome to TTR. Good luck with school and with your new career. You'll have a lot of BS to put up with for the first couple of years as a new driver. But after you get that behind you, you'll be a sought-after item. Take care of your license and the trucking business will take care of you for the rest of your life.
You'll get lots of "advice" here! Some good and some maybe not so good. Use your best judgement. Welcome!
Okay, I have a question. I have a couple friends that drive locally. They have helped me along from time to time when I worked at Coca-Cola. I mentioned my plans to them and they said that ATDS is good but since I have practically no money to my name, I should look for a company that would not only pay for my schooling but would also pay for my CDL and would not deduct anything out for repayment later. Is there such a company? If so which? Thank you in advance.
ATDS has a weekend course spread out over eight weeks I believe. Maybe they would be willing to let you do a little at a time as you have money. They have a financing program too, but I don't know much about it. I graduated from there recently and used my GI Bill to pay for the majority of it. The remainder I am repaying through a tuition reimbursement program.
